Veterinary Assistant Niagara SPCA Reports to: Veterinary Manager & Shelter Veterinarian Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt Position Summary The Veterinary Assistant at Niagara SPCA provides essential support to the medical team in the care and treatment of shelter animals. This role focuses on daily animal husbandry, safe handling, clinic preparation and sanitation, and assisting veterinary staff during exams and procedures. Veterinary Assistants are a vital link in ensuring that animals receive high-quality care and that the shelter operates smoothly and efficiently. Key Responsibilities Animal Care & Support Assist with the safe handling and restraint of animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures. Feed, water, and provide daily care for animals in the clinic or isolation areas. Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral change and promptly report observations to veterinary staff. Assist in administering oral or topical medications as directed by a licensed veterinary technician or veterinarian. Provide comfort and compassionate handling for animals under medical care. Clinic & Shelter Operations Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of clinic areas, treatment rooms, and medical equipment. Prepare exam rooms, surgical suites, and supplies for use by veterinary staff. Assist with laundry, instrument cleaning, and sterilization. Support intake exams by gathering supplies and preparing animals for evaluation. Transport animals safely between kennels, exam rooms, and surgery as needed. Team & Public Support Communicate effectively with shelter staff and volunteers regarding animal handling and medical needs. Provide guidance to fosters and adopters regarding basic post-treatment care under the direction of veterinary staff. Represent Niagara SPCA’s mission with professionalism, compassion, and respect for animals and people alike. Qualifications Required: High school diploma or equivalent. At least 6 months of experience in an animal care setting (veterinary clinic, shelter, kennel, or similar). Comfort handling animals of all sizes, temperaments, and health conditions. Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Preferred: Prior veterinary assistant or shelter experience. Knowledge of animal husbandry, basic medical terminology, and safe restraint techniques. Familiarity with PetPoint or other animal shelter software. Physical & Schedule Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted. Frequent bending, lifting, standing, and moving throughout the workday. Work in a physically active environment with exposure to animals, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and zoonotic diseases. Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
