ENGINEERING SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is moderately difficult, sub-professional engineering work performed in the office or in the field. The work involves the responsibility for making the more difficult routine technical computations and drawings, and gathering preliminary data for use by superiors. The incumbent may locate water mains or sewer lines pursuant to New York State Code 53 or locate mains, valves, etc., from existing prints, notes, etc., for repairs to existing facilities, or may be assigned to the upkeep of engineering progress payments, system drawings, plant drawings, or other difficult office work. General supervision is received from engineering management with considerable leeway for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of assignments in accordance with Water Board policy and sound engineering practices. Supervision may be exercised over Engineering Aides and other subordinate employees as assigned. The Engineering Systems Technician performs related work as required.·
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Operates computer aided design equipment and software;
Performs piping system evaluation and prepares working drawings for the repair of water mains, storm and sanitary installations;
Obtains measurements of flow and pressure in the water distribution and sewer collection systems;
Assists engineering staff in preparation of specifications and drawings for miscellaneous facility improvements; Locates and identifies water and sewer infrastructure using facility records and GIS/GPS tools;
Maintains plant drawings, system drawings, shop drawings, and catalogs; Processes engineering project payment requests;
Operates engineering copier, computer workstations, and general office machines and equipment; Answers inquiries from general public and other agencies regarding work in progress;
Acts as liaison between facility staff and engineering, insuring practicality in newly designed projects;
Tracks and reviews submittals for compliance with Water Board Regulations and related standards, and makes recommendations to superiors;
Performs construction surveying and takes field notes during construction; Makes routine engineering computations;
Performs a variety of sub-professional engineering duties as assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of accepted sub-professional engineering principles applicable to public sewer collection, water distribution, water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities; good knowledge of modem computer aided design tools; working knowledge of geographical information systems and global positioning system tools; ability to interpret Water Board Regulations and insure compliance; skill in facilities layout; skill in surveying; ability to supervise assigned technical personnel; ability to make engineering computations related to work assignments; ability to make written and oral reports as required; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Design/Drafting, or related programs and two (2) years experience as an Engineering Technician or equivalent;
