What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transport Engineer position at NextGen | GTA: A Kelly Telecom Company?
This is a network transport-first role (approximately 85% transport / 15% facilities). You'll be working hands-on across network hubs, central office environments, colocation facilities, and data centers within the Houston market. The facilities component is primarily first-level triage and vendor coordination — the right transport technician will be trained on this side.
What You'll Do
- Install, provision, and troubleshoot DWDM transport equipment across multiple site types
- Troubleshoot transport spans across multiple sites — follow alarms, section off issues, and identify failure points
- Perform fiber testing using OTDR and interpret traces
- Provision and turn up higher-capacity waves
- Coordinate with outside carrier vendors for circuit installs and trouble resolution
- Perform first-level facilities triage — HVAC, DC plants, generators, fire suppression, and building alarms
- Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors for facility repairs
- Respond to network and building emergencies as part of an on-call rotation
Required:
- 3 years of hands-on network transport experience in a telecom, ISP, fiber, or carrier environment
- Hands-on DWDM experience
- ROADM configuration knowledge
- OTDR proficiency — must be able to read traces and understand high/low reflectance impacts
- Experience troubleshooting transport spans across multiple sites
- Comfortable working in hubs, central offices, colo facilities, or data centers
Strongly Preferred:
- Ciena DWDM platform experience
- Long-haul / ILA site exposure
- Central office transport or special services background
- Facilities exposure: HVAC, DC plants, generators, or building systems
Facilities experience is a plus, not a requirement — the right transport technician will be trained on this side.
What to Expect
- Fully on-site role with local travel within the Houston market
- On-call rotation approximately every third week
- Occasional travel up to ~80–100 miles for long-haul site support
- Company vehicle likely provided
Compensation
- Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
- Flexibility for candidates with both strong transport and critical infrastructure backgrounds
