Job Summary
Telecommunications Technician II, also referred to as the Small Cell Tech, is a senior-level role responsible for performing complex Small Cell construction, repair, and maintenance projects. This position requires advanced technical expertise and the ability to take charge as the leader on the job site, ensuring the successful execution of all aspects of the job. While not the overall site leader, a Small Cell Technician II plays a critical role in guiding team members during daily operations, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards, and fostering teamwork. Must possess a Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Operate specialized equipment and tools, such as a Digger/Derrick Truck, for lifting and positioning tasks.
- Lead and execute the installation of utility poles according to provided construction drawings.
- Serve as the point leader on the job site, providing guidance and instruction to team members to ensure safety, efficiency, and task completion.
- Oversee advanced installation tasks, including grounding, coax/fiber handling, and connector installation, while adhering to strict technical and safety guidelines.
- Conduct and supervise testing activities, such as sweep testing, Passive Intermodulation (PIM) (PIM) testing, and fiber testing, to validate system performance and reliability.
- Maintain OSHA regulations and company‑specific EHS protocols on the job site, ensuring safety compliance for all team members.
- Provide mentorship and on‑the‑job training to less experienced technicians, fostering skill development and building a collaborative team environment.
- Interpret and validate construction drawings, RFDS, and technical documentation to ensure accuracy in equipment installations.
- Collaborate with the Foreman and Project Managers to address challenges and implement efficient solutions during daily operations.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum 5 years of telecommunications construction experience, including advanced field responsibilities
- Minimum 1 year of hands‑on Digger/Derrick Truck experience
- Experience setting utility poles, including work within the public right of way
- Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement required
Preferred and Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- OSHA 10‑Hour certification required
- First Aid / AED / CPR certification required
- Experience operating bucket trucks preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including but not limited to:
- RF Awareness
- ANSI A10.48 Competent Rigging
- Fall Protection Awareness
- Crane Spotter / Signal Person
- Bucket Truck Operations
Skills Required
- Proficiency in setting utility poles using a Digger/Derrick Truck.
- Proficiency in the operation of a Digger/Derrick Truck and associated systems.
- Strong leadership abilities to guide team members effectively during daily operations.
- Advanced technical skills in troubleshooting, system optimization, and equipment testing.
- Clear communication skills to relay instructions, articulate project needs, and document progress accurately.
- Exceptional problem‑solving skills, particularly in high‑pressure, fast‑paced work environments.
Direct / Indirect Supervisory Responsibility
- Acts as a leader on the job site and provides mentorship to junior team members.
- Ability to direct team members to accomplish the timely and safe completion of assigned tasks.
Work Environment / Physical Demands / Travel Required
- Ability to work in all weather conditions except for unsafe or extreme weather conditions.
- Desire and ability to work as part of a team to efficiently complete tasks.
- Travel is required up to 100% of the time.
