Position: Biomass Plant Operator

Position Summary:
Power plant operators (PO) are skilled professionals responsible for controlling and maintaining systems that generate and distribute electric power. In 2026, their role is essential for maintaining grid stability and integrating both traditional and renewable energy sources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Equipment Control: Start and stop generators, turbines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.
- System Monitoring: Continuously read charts, meters, and gauges to monitor voltage and electricity flows, ensuring they stay within specified parameters.
- Load Adjustment: Regulate power flow between generating stations and substations to meet fluctuating consumer demand.
- Maintenance & Repair: Perform routine preventive maintenance, such as lubricating parts, cleaning equipment, and troubleshooting mechanical or electrical malfunctions.
- Data Logging: Maintain accurate records of operational data, equipment performance, and maintenance activities.
- Safety Management: Adhere to strict safety and environmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA) and respond to emergencies like power outages or equipment failures. Report all safety concerns to the Control Operator and ensure it is documented in the E-Log.
- Conduct: Read and follow all procedures, safety bulletins and tasks identified in the Night Orders.
Key Qualifications:
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is the standard entry-level requirement. Many employers now prefer or require a vocational certificate or an associate degree in power plant technology.
- Experience: Many roles require 3–5 years of experience in an industrial or military environment, though entry-level positions focus on extensive on-the-job training. Experience with solid fuel fired power plants.
- Certification: Positions impacting the power grid often require certification from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). Accepted applicants are required to be able to attend the training and pass the test to be Certified Weighmasters.
- Key Skills: High mechanical aptitude, strong mathematical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to solve problems under pressure.
