GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):
The METCO Director provides oversight and leadership for the METCO program in the Newton Public Schools. The Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) is a state-funded educational program designed to expand educational opportunities, increase diversity, and reduce racial isolation by permitting students from Boston and Springfield to attend public systems in surrounding suburban communities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
? Master’s Degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work or related area
? DESE certification as a Supervisor/Director
? Demonstrated experience working with urban parents and children of color
? Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
? Excellent oral and written communication skills
? Efficient and effective use of technology
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):
? Oversee all activities for the METCO program in the Newton Public Schools
? Participate in the selection and placement of METCO students
? Coordinate orientation programs for incoming METCO students
? Assist principals and faculty in using achievement data to identify the educational needs of METCO students and to develop new programs/initiatives to increase student achievement
? Ensure that METCO parents are informed about school programs and services
? Participate in the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of METCO staff
? Provide guidance to administrators and faculty on cultural proficiency, multicultural curriculum, and the goal of high academic expectations for urban students of color
? Meet regularly with principals and METCO staff to discuss program improvements
? Work closely with the Assistant Superintendent and the Business & Finance office to prepare, implement, and monitor the annual METCO program budget
? Prepare an annual evaluation of the METCO program by utilizing current student achievement and social involvement data ? Maintain a relationship with METCO, Inc. and the METCO Directors Association, as well as other relevant educational or cultural organizations
? Serve on appropriate school-based committees and attend administrative, faculty, parent, and student meetings ? Complete required district and state reports
? Consistent and on-time attendance is required
? Responsible for implementing “other job-related duties” as needed

Physical Requirements:
? Ability to operate a computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, and all other standard office equipment ? Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
? Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 15 pounds
? Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building
? Ability to travel between school locations
