Reports to: METCO Director, School Principal/Vice Principal

SUMMARY: 

The METCO Academic Advisor will be a critical member of the Newton METCO team.  The METCO advisor will work with our elementary school students to provide academic and social-emotional support. The METCO Academic Advisor will actively monitor and support students’ academic and social well-being. The Academic Advisor will develop strong collaborative relationships with parents, faculty, staff, and administration. The successful candidate for this role will have experience working with a diverse urban student population. 

 

Qualifications:

 

Experience (Required/Preferred)

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to connect with diverse groups of students and families
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of handling student information confidentially
  • Solid computer skills, including working knowledge of Google Docs
  • Willingness to participate in on-going professional development
  • Ability to form strong collaborative relationships with all stakeholders

Degree (Required/Preferred)

  • Bachelor’s degree (or an Associate’s degree with relevant experience) Note: Tuition reimbursement available per NTA Unit C contract for degree completion.

 

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To):

  • Works in K-5 classrooms to provide direct academic support to METCO students.
  • Advocates for the needs of METCO students and their families with administration and staff.
  • Inspires, encourages, and supports METCO students in achieving their best.
  • Monitors student work completion and works directly with the classroom teacher to determine additional required resources.
  • Monitors student attendance daily.  Phones home directly when students are not in school.
  • Regularly communicates with METCO Elementary Engagement Specialist regarding student academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Works with the Elementary Engagement Specialist to plan family outreach events and special programming events.
  • Supports belonging by facilitating lunch bunch groups and affinity groups.
  • Monitors and supports students before and after school.
  • Attends METCO staff meetings and brings in written documentation as to student progress.
  • Supports the Elementary Engagement Specialist with METCO Special Event Planning.
  • Attends 4 Evening or Weekend METCO Events during the School Year.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned 

 

Evaluation:  Reports to the METCO Director, Elementary School Principals in the schools assigned are secondary evaluators

 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working with students from diverse urban communities.
