EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

  • Present employment with Newport Public Schools as a teacher
  • SMILE Training

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Plan and direct weekly 1.5 – 2 hour integrated math-science computer activities for URI/SMILE group. 
  • If your meetings are 2 hours your club will meet for 32 weeks. 
  • If your meetings are 1.5 hours your club will meet for 40 weeks. 
  • Meetings that are canceled or postponed should be rescheduled. 
  • Annual events count as 2 meeting days, and Family Science Night counts as one meeting day. Once the meeting day has been decided on, there is only one meeting per week, with the exception of the week of Family Science Night when a second meeting in that week is permitted if deemed necessary by the SMILE club leaders to prepare for Family Science Night. 
  • Field trips that are 2 hours or more count as 1 club meeting. There may be two meetings in 1 week if a field trip occurs on a non club meeting day. 
  1. Identify and recruit students from the appropriate grades to be members of the URI/SMILE group. Membership at any one time should be approximately 20. 
  • At the discretion of the Superintendent, if there are less than 15 students in a club, only one stipend of $2,700 may be paid and shared if there are two co-leaders.
  1. Plan and conduct field trips with URI/SMILE group in the local area. Field trips should complement URI/SMILE projects and further the goals of the program. 

 

  1. Prepare students for and participate with students in URI/SMILE Special events.

 

  1. Keep records of the following and report to the URI/SMILE office: 
  • Weekly written Logs due to SMILE office by Monday following each meeting week group activity logs, including 
    • attendance by student, teachers, parent 
    • description of activity, including contact persons submitted online 
    •  student membership forms (should be entered online not later than 10/31)
  • Keep Records 
    • grades of student members 
    • expenditures from SMILE funds 
    • contacts with the community 
  1. Attend all Teachers’ Workshops at URI and at local sites. If a SMILE teacher does not attend a Teachers’ Workshop, the District will send to The URI SMILE Program $200 for each workshop not attended by any of the SMILE teachers in the District. 
  • At the discretion of the Superintendent, if the Teachers’ Workshops are not attended, the SMILE teacher’s stipend may be reduced by $200 for each workshop not attended. Teacher(s) will be required to attend one or more make-up sessions at the URI SMILE office. Teachers who do not attend Teachers’ Workshop(s) will not be eligible for longevity bonuses for that year. 
  1. Keep URI/SMILE equipment and materials in good working order. Share expertise with colleagues. Bring equipment listed to return in bins at May Teachers Workshop. 
  1. Maintain contact with and encourage participation of parents of URI/SMILE students.
  1. Facilitate transportation of students to and from URI/SMILE meetings and field trips. 
  1. Submit a written article about the club and pictures once a year for the SMILE Newsletter. Due dates can be found in the SMILE calendar and at www.uri.edu/smile). URI approval for stipend will be withheld until the club article is received.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Stipend amount $2700 (2 in equal payments).  Position is continuous until terminated by the building admin or employee.
