POSITION: Secondary ELL Teacher 

LOCATION: Thompson Middle School

REPORTS TO: Principal

SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Provide English language development classes, using a variety of ESL methodologies to meet the needs of these students. Identify non-English speaking students, and assume responsibility for WIDA Screener testing and ACCESS testing.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

• Must hold a valid RI Certification with:

• Secondary Certification required, and
• All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12, or ESL Specialist/Consultant, Grades PK-12

• Experience teaching English Learner students preferred

• Evidence of developing teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of each student;
• Ability to know and utilize technology in the teaching and learning process;
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, education experience, teaching, educational experience, and the interview process;
• Any such alternatives to the above qualifications as the committee may deem acceptable and appropriate.
• Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Employs a variety of English as a Second Language (ESL) methodologies and instruction media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved; pulls EL students for Tier 2 or 3 groups for English Language Development (ELD)/Academic Language Development (ALD) support
• Provides learning experiences in reading, language arts, pre-reading, arithmetic and science to students, utilizing courses of study adopted by the School Committee and other appropriate learning activities;
• Develops lesson plans, and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student;
• Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction;
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom;
• Evaluates students academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports;
• Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program;
• Identifies students’ needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems;
• Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers;
• Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities;
• Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides, maintains required inventory records;
• Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day;
• Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program;
• Demonstrates an understanding of standards-based education and how it is implemented in the classroom;
• Participates in curriculum development programs as required;
• Participates in faculty committees and attends after-school events when able;
• Facilitates WIDA Screening and ACCESS testing
• Performs such other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or designee at Thompson Middle School. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract.  Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators.
