What are the responsibilities and job description for the ULTRASOUND TECH position at Newport Hospital and Health Services?
Primary Scheduled Hours: Per Diem
Job Summary: Obtain the safest and highest quality diagnostic Sonography exams for image documentation of anatomy and pathology for interpretation by a Radiologist per established guidelines and protocols.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs high quality Sonography exams that are consistently approved by the Radiologist and performed to accepted protocol.
- Performs various Sonography exams including, but not limited to abdomen, breast, renal, obstetric, gynecologic, thyroid, scrotal, venous doppler (extremities), limited venous arterial, prostate exams and assisting Radiologist with invasive Sonography procedures.
- Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
- Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
- Enters exam data and patient information into ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
- Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
- Produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data and submits exams to PACs.
- Submits necessary documentation and transmitting the same to others involved in patient’s care/imaging processes (filling in relevant info into online forms, completing exams in EHR, creating notes in EHR, etc. when there are unforeseen/aberrant events such as complications, incomplete/limited exams, etc.) on a regular or ad hoc basis.
- Explains the exam to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
- Obtains appropriate patient histories/demonstrates proficiency at utilizing current EHR/PACs in locating prior reports/studies pertinent to exams being done.
- Utilizes EHR to track patient check-in/availability and accurately codes procedures.
- Knowledge of department protocols and procedures and can locate protocols/procedures if clarification is needed.
- Takes phone calls from patients to clarify exams, patient preparatory information and general questions, as well as contacting providers/ordering office for order clarification.
- Discusses exam results with supervisor, Radiologist, or attending provider when appropriate.
- Assists in the transportation of patients as needed.
Education Background and Experience Requirements
Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Graduation from an Accredited Sonography Program to pass the ARDMS.
Required Licensure / Certifications:
Successful completion of an approved two (2) year program in Sonography.
Must have successfully passed the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registration (has one discipline in place).
Current CPR/BLS required.
Required Experience:
Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
Understanding of ultrasound procedures to be read by a Radiologist.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is preferred but not required.
One (1) year of experience as a Sonographer preferred.
Experience with the following computer applications is highly desired: Stentor; EPIC; Microsoft Office; Internet/Intranet

Successful candidates typically begin between the beginning and midpoint of the compensation range dependent on qualifications/experience and receive compensation in increments increases annually.
