Job purpose
The Underwriting Analyst is a key partner in the evaluation and execution of multifamily and mixed-use loan transactions across the United States. Working closely with Underwriters through the full life cycle of a deal, this role provides hands-on exposure to commercial real estate finance, underwriting, and transaction execution.
This position is ideal for an analytical, proactive self-starter who wants to develop a deep understanding of how deals are structured, evaluated, and closed. Through financial analysis, market research, due diligence coordination, credit evaluation, and underwriting support, the Analyst plays an integral role in helping move transactions from initial review through approval and closing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Partner with Underwriters, including the Deputy Chief Underwriter and Chief Underwriter, throughout all states of the underwriting and loan closing process.
- Analyze multifamily and mixed-use transactions to help evaluate acquisition and refinance opportunities across the US.
- Research market fundamentals, property performance trends, and borrower financials to identify strengths, risks, and key drivers impacting each transaction.
- Input and analyze property financial information using proprietary Excel underwriting models to evaluate occupancy trends, net operating income, debt service coverage, and overall asset performance.
- Collect, organize, and review due diligence materials, including borrower financials, property operating statements, third-party reports, and agency documentation.
- Assist in preparing underwriting narratives, credit memoranda, and loan recommendation materials for internal and agency approval.
- Analyze borrower financial statements, real estate portfolios, and credit reports to assess financial strength and identify potential risks.
- Coordinate aspects of the property inspection and due diligence process, including occasional participation in site inspections, lease audits, and related field review activities.
- Develop a strong understanding of agency lender guidelines, underwriting standards, and transaction structuring.
- Manage multiple transactions and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Communicate effectively across teams, vendors, and external partners to help ensure smooth and timely execution of transactions.
- Support additional analytical, operational, and project-related initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance or Real Estate
- Strong interest in real estate, lending, and financial analysis
- Ability to conduct research and verify facts quickly
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize conclusions
- Ability to travel occasionally
- Must be detail-oriented and able to multi-task
- Knowledge of cash flow analysis and exposure to commercial real estate preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
