What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Control Engineer position at Newlight?
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controls Engineer to design, develop, and optimize control systems for our hydrogen injection system. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and superior performance of our systems
Newlight's mission is to accelerate the transition of the maritime industry to sustainable energy by making sustainable shipping affordable and focusing on the current fleet with hydrogen integration. Newlight develops a plugin for ships that reduces fuel consumption and emissions by injecting hydrogen as a dual fuel for existing engines.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Design and develop control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems, to meet project specifications and requirements.
- Program, test, and troubleshoot control algorithms and logic for automation systems.
- Integrate sensors, actuators, and other hardware components into the control systems. Including DAQ systems for different engines on the vessels.
- Perform system diagnostics and implement improvements to enhance performance and reliability.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company protocols.
- Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases.
- Theoretical and practical understanding of fuel properties, combustion processes, pollutant formation, and working knowledge of burner/combustor designs.
Requirements we seek:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in designing and implementing control systems.
- Proficiency in programming PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar).
- Proficiency in Simulink, HIL, and Matlab.
- Strong knowledge of control theory, automation protocols, and system integration.
- Hands-on experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, PROFIBUS).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong background in mechanical or electrical systems.
- This role requires on-site presence to facilitate rapid iteration cycles in collaboration with the combustion engineer.
Ways To Stand Out:
- Familiarity with 2-stroke marine engines.
- Create detailed technical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals.
- Knowledge in developing ML algorithms.
- Strong background in mechanical and electrical systems, particularly in the maritime or automotive sectors.

- Knowledge in working with Python/PyTorch, Next.js, LabVIEW, and MATLAB.
