    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The assistant principal is a member of the instructional management team and is directly responsible to the building principal. General responsibilities include assisting with the leadership functions in the school, and assisting in the implementation and monitoring of programs to ensure quality instruction and an appropriate balance among all programs offered within the school.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.     • Assists in the interpretation and implementation Board policies and administrative regulations.
    • Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, maintaining fidelity to district evaluation procedures.
    • Uses assessments, data systems, and accountability strategies to improve achievement, monitor and evaluate progress, and close achievement gaps.
    • Assists in the monitoring of the implementation of a standards-based curriculum.
    • Holds regular meetings for the discussion and improvement of teaching and learning.
    • Supports and implements professional learning.
    • Collaborates with other administrators to coordinate district and state assessments.
    • Directs the activities of assigned school professional and non-professional staff members in the performance of their duties.
    • Maintains staff and student records.
    • Assists in establishing and implementing guidelines for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline.
    • Assists in the screening, training and assigning of school staff.
    • Assists interpreting the school's program to the community and enlisting the participation of the community in school life.
    • Assists in the responsibility for the security and safety of the school.
    • Participates in the Planning and Placement Team and 504 process.
    • Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of reports, records lists, and other paperwork appropriate to the school's administration to the school's administration and/or required by the district or State Department of Education.
    • Assists in coordinating community use of facilities.

    • Thorough knowledge of concepts and principles of curriculum design and development and effective instructional practices.
    • Knowledge of school administration and public relations.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to deal effectively with staff and the public.
    • Knowledge of national, state and local educational goals and objectives.
    • Ability to efficiently schedule and coordinate staff, meetings and events.
    • Ability to use computer equipment and related software programs.
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information as necessary.
    • Receptive to constructive criticism with self-discipline to implement recommendations for improvement.
    • Compare, interpret, analyze and generate data and apply basic principles of statistics.
    • Apply principles of logical, critical, creative or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    • Demonstrate continued professional curiosity and growth.
    • Remains abreast of developments and innovations in the field by reading current literature and attending professional development activities.
    • Communicates high expectations of students, staff, parents/guardians and community partners.

    REQUIRED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    • Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and conditions.
    • Ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption.
    • Ability to implement physical management training.
    • Ability to attend to task / function for more than 60 minutes at a time.
    • Ability to remember multiple tasks / assignments given to self and others over long periods of time.
    • Ability to move throughout all buildings and sites.
    • Works in office setting subject to continuous interruptions.
    • Exposure to video display terminals on a daily basis.
    • Ability to hear normal sounds with some background noise and to communicate effectively.
    • Ability to file letters, correspondence, reports, etc. in file cabinet drawers ranging from 1' to 5' from the floor.

    REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


    Experience/Requirement: Graduation from an accredited college with an advanced level degree, Masters or beyond with course work in Educational Administration and, a minimum of five (5) years' experience in education and any combination of training and experience which provides a demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position.

    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

    Connecticut State Department of Education Certification required:
    • Intermediate Administrator & Supervisor (092)
