    The Newington Public Schools is seeking highly dynamic and skilled instructional leaders for two Elementary Principal vacancies scheduled to begin in July 2024 at John Paterson and Elizabeth Green Elementary Schools. Interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The principal is the administrative officer and educational leader of the school. As a member of the leadership team, the principal is responsible to the Superintendent of Schools or the superintendent’s designee and works cooperatively with program supervisors and other staff members. General responsibilities include: providing leadership in fostering a school climate conducive to learning and the development of individual students, implementing and monitoring all building level programs to insure quality instruction and balance among program offerings within the school, and developing and implementing a program of public relations in order to further the community’s understanding and support of the school and the educational program.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position.
    • Interprets and implements Board policies and administrative regulations.
    • Directs the activities of school professional and non-professional staff members in the performance of their duties.
    • Supervises and evaluates members of the school staff.
    • Fosters good interpersonal relations among students, staff, parents and community.
    • Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
    • Establishes guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline.
    • Assists in the recruiting, screening, training, hiring, and assigning of school staff.
    • Reports to appropriate central office administrative staff regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum.
    • Interprets the school’s program to parents and the community and enlists the participation of parents and the community in school life.
    • Assumes responsibility for the safety and security of the school plant for all students and staff.
    • Assists in the management and preparation of the school budget.
    • Conducts meetings of the staff, as necessary, for the proper functioning of the school or one of its component sub-groups.
    • Supervises the school planning and placement team process.
    • Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and other paperwork appropriate to the school’s administration and/or required by the district.
    • Assists in providing opportunities for appropriate clubs, athletic activities and other extra- curricular activities.
    • Assists in coordinating community use of school facilities.
    • Keeps the superintendent informed of the school’s activities and problems.
    • Assists in developing and implementing professional development programs for appropriate staff.
    • Coordinates and supervises all student testing and evaluation.
    • Uses assessment data to guide and improve student learning.
    • Works cooperatively with other administrators to coordinate K-12 curriculum, instruction and assessment.
    • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
    • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the superintendent.

    ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    • May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.

    REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Experience/Requirement: Graduation from an accredited college with an advanced level degree, Masters or beyond with course work in Educational Administration and, a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in education and any combination of training and experience which provides a demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position.

    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

    Connecticut State Department of Education Certification required:
    • Intermediate Administrator & Supervisor (092)
