Histology Laboratory Manager


Founded in 1986, Newcomer Supply is a family-owned company based in Waunakee, WI. We are a leading manufacturer and distributor of histology laboratories products. Our core missions for product excellence and customer support continue to drive the company’s growth. We are looking to hire a histology laboratory manager to help expand our capacity to support customers in their work to provide great patient care.

 

Job Summary:

The histology laboratory manager is responsible for applying advanced histology experience, knowledge and management skills to our positive control slide manufacturing and laboratory operations. This position is responsible for the direct management of all laboratory histology staff, equipment, safety, and compliance. In coordination and collaboration with the company quality manager the laboratory manager is a vital to ensuring the companies quality control and quality assurance programs are effective and efficient.

Job Type:

Full-Time exempt, in person position

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Biological, Chemical, or Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science, required

Current ASCP certification, HT or HTL required

 

Experience:

5 years of histology laboratory experience required

2 years laboratory management experience required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

·        Manage employee compliance and training to ensure all requirements are met and current in accordance with laboratory and company policy.

·        Actively engages, coaches, educates, and mentors laboratory staff.

·        Ensure staff performs to established expectations and addresses low performance levels as required.

·        Focused on providing leadership, direction, and support to key laboratory supervisory staff.

·        Responsible for advancing the histology knowledge and skill of all laboratory technicians. 

·        Identifying and fostering staff ready for advancing their laboratory and leadership responsibilities.  

·        Provide clear, calm resolution guidance for staff and customer as issues arise. 

·        Leads timely and constructive technician performance and annual reviews.

·        Recruits and interviews staff.

·        Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

 

Laboratory Responsibilities:

·        Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory production and service work. Ensuring outcomes are in alignment with company goals and customer expectations.

·        Measure and report all key laboratory indicators for both production and service workflows. Ensuring the company has the data needed to make decisions and foster continuous improvement.

·        Oversee the tracking, analysis, and adjustments of laboratory staff workloads to meet the ebb and flow of customer fulfillment needs and staffing levels.

·        Establishes, reviews, implements, updates laboratory documents. To include technician handbook, policies, procedures, work instructions, forms, and logs.

·        Delegates tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability for laboratory operations and outcomes.

·        Leads laboratory in developing and achieving key performance goals.

·        Excellent project management and outcomes.

·        Manage, organize, lead, weekly and as needed production meetings.  

·        Actively engages in quality assurance and safety initiatives and procedures within the department ensuring the company’s standards are met. 

·        Oversee the purchasing of all laboratory inputs, supplies, services.

·        Provides research and advice on the purchase of equipment, supplies, and services.

·        Ensures laboratory equipment and systems are maintained correctly and operational. 

·        Participate in product development and improvement. Through analysis, testing, and customer engagement.

·        Assures procedural compliance with company, CLIA, CAP, OSHA guidelines. Maintains an audit ready laboratory.  

·        Required to perform key responsibilities of department staff as the need arise.

·        Plans for and ensures minimal disruption to histology production and services due to outside variables related to supply chain distribution and third-party service providers.

·        Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

·        Excellent histology microtomy, staining knowledge, and troubleshooting skills.

·        Can demonstrate knowledge of normal and abnormal tissue structures for the purposes of overseeing and training laboratory tissue grossing technicians.

·        Understands laboratory methods, has expert knowledge of pathological processes with corresponding disease states.

·        Advanced experience in both special and IHC staining.

·        High level data accuracy and attention to detail.

·        Excellent organizational and project management skills. 

·        Dedicated to maintaining and improving laboratory quality, production, training, and safety standards.

·        Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills and can communicate with all levels of personnel.

·        High level functionality with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook required. Database experience preferred.

·        Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully. 

·        Prioritizes work activities and uses time efficiently.

·        Thrives in a work environment that requires continuity and continual improvement.

·        Understands and committed to the principles and values of the companies Quality Control and Quality Assurance practices. 

·        Facilitates accurate, timely, and verified communication between management and laboratory staff.

·        Works well under pressure can remain flexible through growth and change.

·        Can construct and present logical and wholistic solutions to complex interconnect problems.

·        Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, and trustworthiness.

·        Works well in a varied environment, laboratory, office, warehouse, and with all types of people from different backgrounds. 

·        Demonstrates professionalism throughout the work environment and with all team members.

 

Physical and Workplace Requirements:

The physical demands outlined here must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions.

·        Occasionally required to lift items that weigh up to 35 pounds.

·        Employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.

·        For histological purposes, sees the common color spectrum. 

·        Hours and availability may flex depending on business needs.

·        Minimal travel may be required.

·        Contact and communication with customers and vendors.
