Tasks include paving, patching, right-of-way maintenance, underdrain installation, shoulder and slope restoration, crack pouring, drainage structure repair, repair and erection of fences, lighting, guide rails, delineators and signs. Also building temporary structures and chutes for removal of debris, fabricating and erecting scaffolding, cribbing, staging and shoring; performing concrete and steel repairs (including removal of concrete with pneumatic tolls and sand blasting steel and concrete), painting and stream channel maintenance. Will be required to operate a variety of gasoline and diesel driven construction equipment and vehicles in the performance of bridge, highway, and facility operations, maintenance and/or construction activities, in addition to snow and ice control equipment vehicles including front-end loaders, truck with plows, spreaders, and tractors.

Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 – 36 Month Traineeship:
Possession of a valid NYS Commercial Driver’s License Class B Permit with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 – 24 Month Traineeship
This is a Unit 1 (Teamsters) position. The NYS Thruway Authority offers an extensive benefits package, including but not limited to paid time off, sick leave incentive, membership to the NYS Retirement System, and 90% tuition assistance.

The salary range for this position includes all applicable annual components of pay which are:
Base Pay Range from Hiring Rate $21.89 up to Job Rate $29.40.
Geographic Pay: $3.37
This position may be filled as a traineeship. The starting salaries for this traineeship are outlined below. For current New York State employees, salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.
$25.26 (Trainee 1)
$26.87 (Trainee 2)
$28.46 (Trainee 3)
$30.37 (Journey Level)

- One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1.
- Possession of a NYS Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND six months of experience in operating construction equipment vehicles, AND twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade work related to bridge construction or repair.
- A valid NYS Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.
- One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2.
- Possession of a NYS Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND twelve months of experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles AND eighteen months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
- Satisfactory completion of a three-year Thruway Maintenance Worker Traineeship.
- Possession of a NYS Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND one year of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles, AND two years of experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade work related to bridge construction or repair.
