Under the direction of the Park Manager or designee, the Trades Generalist will perform journey-level work in plumbing and skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and electrical tasks. This position will aid in the rehabilitation, construction, and repair of state park buildings, structures, and infrastructure using the standard tools of the trade. The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of full-time experience under a skilled tradesperson, which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Generalist.

The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($61,548) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).

Duties Description
Under the direction of the Park Manager or designee, the Trades Generalist will perform journey-level work in plumbing and skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and electrical tasks. This position will aid in the rehabilitation, construction, and repair of state park buildings, structures, and infrastructure using the standard tools of the trade. The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Performs repairs or replacements on plumbing and septic infrastructure.
- Performs semi-skilled repairs and replacements requiring basic to moderate electrical skills.
- Performs repairs requiring basic to moderate carpentry and masonry skills.
- Operates machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, and loaders.
- Maintains adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish tasks; makes necessary purchases following all Agency guidelines.
- Assists with maintenance of roads, paths, and trails.
- Completes daily maintenance procedures for equipment, as well as basic servicing of motor equipment including troubleshooting, checking fluids, changing fluids, parts, etc.
- Requires use of hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the assigned trade.
- Drains, winterizes, and recharges the park water system seasonally.
- Will be responsible for overall coordination and execution of projects, working independently with minimal direct supervision.
- Assigns, supervises, reviews, trains, and evaluates work of lower-level employees.
- This position involves medium to heavy physical labor and working outside in all weather conditions.
- Assists in snow and ice control and operates snow removal equipment.
- Assists with tree removal/pruning operations that require the operation of chippers, stump grinders, and lift equipment as needed.
- Assists in other areas of park operations as directed.
- Communicates effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
- Adheres to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications

- Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
- Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
