Duties Description
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is seeking three seasonal Trail Technicians for the Palisades Region. These positions will perform trail maintenance and assist with trail improvement projects. Under the direction of higher-level Trail Crew staff, the selected candidate’s duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Perform a variety of hands-on trail improvement projects, including new trail construction and stone steps installation.
- Demonstrate safe working practices and the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
- Use and maintain tools and equipment properly.
- Perform inventory, assessment, and analysis of regional trail network conditions, needs and uses.
- Operate a State-provided vehicle, filling out daily mileage logs, and maintaining a clean work vehicle.
- Utilize proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) during work tasks.
- Demonstrate an attentiveness to detail while performing physically demanding work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
- Perform other related duties as required.

- Must be able to work on uneven and steep terrain, carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment of up to 50Ibs or more.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
- Working knowledge of sustainable trail building techniques.
- Experience with outdoor labor, particularly with trail construction and maintenance, or related experience, such as landscaping, carpentry, general construction, etc.
- Experience with trail-related tools including shovels, pick mattocks, rock bars, and loppers.
- Leadership, volunteer coordination, and project management experience.
- Working towards a degree in environmental science, forestry, outdoor recreation, wildlife, fisheries, biology, Geography/GIS, urban or regional planning, landscape architecture, or an equivalent discipline.
