Duties Description
Under the supervision of higher-level staff, the incumbent for this position will be assigned various duties throughout the horticulture department. Training will be provided on the use of tools and equipment. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plant trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, grasses, and bulbs.
- Perform seasonal gardening and landscaping work such as watering, pruning, weeding, deadheading, mulching, dividing, transplanting, soil placement, and leaf removal.
- Identify abnormal plant conditions which may be caused by disease, insects, or growing conditions and report to supervisor.
- Identify invasive species, report to supervisor, and assist with removal to maintain native plant beds.
- Remove litter and other debris from plant beds, lawn areas, and pathways.
- Assist with paver maintenance in outdoor viewing areas.
- Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment of varying weights and sizes.
- Operate weed trimmers, push lawn mowers, riding lawn mowers, and various leaf blowers for maintenance work.
- May operate equipment such as tractors, augers, skid steers and other heavy equipment.
- May assist with other work tasks upon request.

- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
- Must be able to work a variable schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to safely and effectively operate and use lawn/garden equipment and small hand tools.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Horticulture experience, including the ability to identify native plants and trees.
