Duties Description
The incumbent will monitor and maintain security systems to control access to buildings and restricted areas; conduct scheduled rounds; inspect building fire and safety equipment; during fire drills, instruct and direct people to routes of egress; prepare and write reports involving incidents or accidents.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Permanent Transfer: NYS employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive status as a Security Officer (G-8), Security Services Assistant 1 (G-6) or Correction Officer (G15) and eligible to transfer to Security Officer (G8) under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Open Competitive/NY HELPS: Must have a current New York State Security Guard Photo ID issued by the New York State Department of State AND:
Either 1. six months of post-Security Guard Registration experience as a Security Guard;
Or 2. six months of experience as a police officer or peace officer;
Or 3. six months of active U.S. military service where you performed security duties on a United States military base or vessel and an honorable discharge or under conditions in the NYS Restoration of Honor Act. Security duties on a United States military base or vessel include working as military police or as security personnel performing foot and motorized patrol, control of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, flight line security, and crime prevention/physical security.

Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
All candidates must have, and continuously maintain, their current Security Guard Photo ID issued by the NYS Department of State in order to accept and maintain employment. A copy of your Security Guard Photo ID must accompany your resume. Candidates must also possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
The incumbent must meet established physical and medical requirements for appointment to the position. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
This position is part of the NYS HELPS program. No examination is required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
