Duties Description
This position will be supervised by a Senior Research Associate in consultation with the Family Court Senior Research Associate, both of whom report directly to the Director of Research.
Specifics Of Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Develop broad knowledge in public defense related research, as well as current research on policy implementation science; and maintain an annotated bibliography of relevant research studies.
- Develop working knowledge of other states’ public defense system frameworks, standards, and initiatives. Provide periodic updates on emerging public defense research, including but not limited to research on representation in criminal court, Family Court, and appellate representation, holistic representation models, etc.
- Prepare and format public defense provider data for ILS internal review and data verification. Assist in drafting research and policy reports for internal and external distribution.
- Directly assist the Family Court Senior Research Associate with semi-annual Family Court data collection, including preparing for data submissions, data verification, data cleaning, and provider follow-up. Assist in data officer trainings and the development of training materials, and with outreach to Family Court grantees.
- Work with Research Team to conduct site visits to discuss data reporting requirements and to better understand data collection and public defense practice within the counties. As needed, follow-up with public defense providers on their data reporting. Coordinate and conduct Family Court and criminal court observations.
- Assume primary responsibility for coordinating the Research Team’s annual report writing and publication schedule.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for collaboration with ILS programmatic teams on policy related publications.
- Maintain familiarity with all ILS data reporting requirements.
- The Data and Policy Analyst will also undertake other such activities as may be requested by the Director, Counsel, and the Director of Research.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, law, public policy, public administration, social welfare, juvenile justice or a related field. Minimum of 2 years’ total experience in criminal justice research, or research in a closely related field such as public policy, public administration, social welfare, or juvenile justice, etc.*
- Substitutions: four years of specialized experience or associate’s degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
- Qualified candidates must be comfortable with Microsoft software, especially Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Comfortable working in diverse settings; experience working with a diverse team
- Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and strong writing skills
- Demonstrable, superior organizational skills
Additional Comments
- Travel may be required (approximately 20%), including during evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required, or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Salary : $75,000 - $83,286
