Responsibilities

Provisional Appointment Notice

This position is classified within the competitive class of the New York State Civil Service system and, as such, is subject to the examination and appointment requirements prescribed by Civil Service Law. Permanent appointment will be contingent upon success in a future civil service examination and subsequent placement on the resulting eligible list. Being reachable on the eligible list does not guarantee permanent appointment. Appointments will be made in accordance with the New York State Civil Service Law, including “Rule-of-Three”.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involves performing a variety of routine and specialized tests in a public health laboratory relative to environmental microbiology including bacteriology, molecular microbiology, virology, parasitology, and vector borne-diseases. This is technical laboratory work involving the performance of diagnostic tests. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of a higher ranking technical employee who assigns and reviews work to ensure compliance with established procedures. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

– Conducts routine and specialized tests relative to environmental microbiology and molecular microbiology as they pertain to public health and environmental assessment;

– Performs routine and special microbiological tests on potable/non-potable water, environmental, industrial, and sewage plant samples;

– Performs microscopic examinations, prepares various media, reagents, stains, smears and solutions for specific tests;

– Performs rapid molecular laboratory techniques to respond to public health threats and emergencies as part of the federal Laboratory Response Network (LRN);

– Participates in public health preparedness development and response to emergencies with the local, state, and federal LRN;

Minimum Qualification

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree* in Molecular Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Microbiology; or,
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree* in a biological, chemical or physical science and one (1) year of laboratory technologist experience in an environmental, clinical or public health laboratory; or:
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Salary: $66,219
