What are the responsibilities and job description for the Policy & Budget Director position at New York State Assembly?
Policy and Budget Director:
Will develop, analysis, and implement the office’s legislative and budget priorities. The Director will conduct research on city, state and federal policy issues, draft legislation, and guide the Assembly member’s strategy throughout the annual budget process. The role involves working closely with community organizations, government agencies, legislative staff and other stakeholders to advance legislation and budget initiatives. This position requires strong analytical and communication skills and a deep understanding of New York State government - including the legislative process and budget cycle. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to advancing equitable and effective public policy on behalf of the Assembly member and the communities she serves. The Director will report to the Chief of Staff.
Monday-Friday 9a-5p
Salary:$50,000-$60,000 DOE
❖ Bachelor’s degree required; a JD or Master in Policy or Administration is preferred.
❖ Demonstrated commitment to the policy and community priorities of Assemblymember.
❖ Deep understanding of New York State government, including the legislative process and the state budget cycle.
❖ Demonstrated experience in public policy, government affairs, budgeting, or a related field.
❖ Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to interpret complex policy and fiscal information.
❖ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear policy memos, briefs, and legislative materials.
❖ Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced legislative environment.
❖ Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills with stakeholders, community groups, and government partners.
❖ Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to both offer and receive feedback in a constructive and solutions-oriented manner.
❖ Experience cultivating and maintaining respectful, professional relationships within fast-paced, mission-driven environments.
❖ Proficiency with data analysis tools, budget documents, and legislative tracking systems.
