Head Props

The Public Theater seeks an experienced Head Props to oversee and manage the props department for our multi-theater complex. The Head Props will lead a team of props crew members, ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of all performances. This position will also support the maintenance of production props, assist with the organization and upkeep of our props inventory at 425 Lafayette Street and The Delacorte Theater, and occasionally serve as the running crew for productions.

This position is covered under an IATSE, Local No. One collective bargaining agreement. 

Key Responsibilities:

· Lead and supervise props crews across all Public Theater productions and performances in multiple venues.

· Collaborate with Props Supervisor to coordinate daily props operations, including setup, preset, show runs, and strike.

· Serve as run crew for performances as needed.

· Maintain the integrity, safety, and functionality of show props throughout the run of each production.

· Collaborate closely with stage management, production management, and other departments to ensure smooth performance operations.

· Assist the Properties Supervisor in maintaining and organizing the props inventory and storage spaces at 425 Lafayette Street and The Delacorte Theater.

· Support load-ins, load-outs, and changeovers between productions as required.

· Maintain a safe working environment and enforce safety protocols for all props and properties operations, including interface with some special effects and food production.

· Assist with budget tracking, labor forecasting, payroll, and materials management related to props operations.

· Communicate clearly and effectively with stage management, designers, and all technical departments.

· Support special events, and other Public Theater programming as assigned.

· Provide mentorship and guidance to assistants, overhire crews, and apprentices

Qualifications:

· Significant professional experience as Head Props or equivalent in a theatrical environment, preferably in a multi-venue complex.

· Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills.

· Proficiency in the handling, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of props and theatrical weapons.

· Ability to problem-solve under pressure and adapt to evolving production needs.

· Knowledge of standard theater safety practices including but not limited to sanitary food preparation and firearm protocols in a theatrical setting.

· Flexible schedule with availability for nights, weekends, and holidays as required by production needs.

Working Conditions:

· Work is primarily performed in theater spaces on and off stage.

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights or on scaffolding.

· Evening and weekend hours may be required based on production needs.

This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
