Job Summary:
The staff registered nurse performs all duties under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Inpatient SUD Supervisor. The RN is responsible for working with personnel and supplies and equipment on the unit in a cost-effective manner and promotes teamwork with physicians and co-workers and staff of other departments. The RN will interpret and implement policies and maintain standards of care and carry out all levels of nursing care activities as needed.

Essentials Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
The following statements reflect the duties considered necessary to describe the essential functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in this position.

Primary Job Duties:
1.Patient Care Responsibilities:
  • Assesses the patient on admission and formulates a plan of care derived from a comprehensive physical psychosocial assessment.
  • Develops comprehensive nursing care plans, which take the patient's total needs into account, utilizes assessment data and integrates the medical care plan.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of treatment plans.
  • Participates in individual, group and family psychotherapy and educational seminars, as appropriate.
  • Receives patient reports from previous shift.
  • Is responsible for meeting patient's physical and emotional needs and carrying out physician's orders.
  • Participates in patient education is advised of any changes in patient's condition and contacts the MD/psychiatrist with any changes including symptoms, PRNs if needed, change in observation level.

2 Assessment:

  • Documents continuous assessment, interventions and evaluations relative to patient progress.
  • Assists with the initial assessment and helps determine the total needs of the patients on the unit
3. Leadership/ Management Function:
  • Performs treatment interventions requiring a physician's order and registered nurses licensure for administration, i.e., medication administration, medical treatments. Obtains physicians signatures on legal forms, orders and consults.
  • Interprets the nursing and treatment needs of the patient to nonprofessional staff members assigned to the patient.
  • Accepts and transcribes verbal and written physician orders and incorporates them into the treatment plan. Verifies pharmacy orders placed into the computer.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness and quality of nursing care in a continuous fashion.
  • Monitors and enforces utilization of proper nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Enacts the counseling role of the nurse.
  • Coordinates the function of the therapeutic milieu. Interaction with other staff will be in a calm professional manner. Clinical communication with patients, their families or friends must be maintained utilizing empathy and respect.
  • Participates in unit based, quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in the measurement and monitoring of key processes to include but not limited to, threats to patient safety, medications, adverse events, restraint usage, effectiveness of pain management, infection prevention, patient flow issues, customer satisfaction, and readmissions.
4.Patient Safety:
  • Maintains a clean and hazard free environment while performing safe techniques.
  • Utilizes the chain of command accordingly to report concerns regarding safety, staffing, patients, quality, and potential emergent situations.
  • Applies emergency protocols as necessary.
5.Compliance:
  • Meets the NYS OMH regulations, standards of nursing practice and other relevant standards.
  • Interpret, implement, and be in compliance with all established procedures/regulations including COBRA, patient rights, HIPPA, and Title 42 Code.
Additional Job Duties:
  • Performs in whatever capacity needed, based on patient's condition, census and/or staffing
levels between SUD Inpatient and the Behavioral Health Unit.
  • Acts as liaison between patients, families and other health care providers.
  • Assists in orienting new employees and on the job training.
  • Organize and implement Medical Assistance Needed STAT proceedings.

  • Follows established department and organization policies, procedures, objectives, quality management, ISO 9001 standards, safety, and Preventing & Managing Crisis Situations, Environmental and infection control, HIPPA, DNV, and Title 42. Demonstrates understanding of behaviors consistent with the Hospital Mission, Vision, Goals and Values. Recognizes the importance of customer satisfaction. Develops appropriate behaviors and attitudes regarding
exceeding customer expectations.
  • Works to promote cooperative staff effort to provide and maintain high-quality service to patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel to assure quality patient care. Courteously responds to inquiries from same.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and safe work environment.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Attitude towards work reflects interest and enthusiasm towards colleagues and profession.
Education Required (Minimum)
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Is licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in the State of New York.
Experience Required (Minimum):
Special Requirements: Has satisfactorily completed hospital in-service training programs. Ability to work effectively with others, maintain confidentiality, possess tact, discretion, diplomacy and credibility. Professional appearance.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Some sitting. Stands and walks most of the day. Lifts, pushes, pulls patients, equipment and furniture. Frequent exposure to disagreeable odors, communicable disease, infections, and injuries from patients/ equipment.
Mental Demands:
Must be able to work with strict deadlines and highly confidential information. Must be able to deal with sensitive issues and discussions with employees and physicians.
Able to handle multiple priorities and act swiftly), accurately, professionally in all situations.
