The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON), the state’s largest association of nonprofit organizations, is seeking a motivated nonprofit expert to lead and be part of a team that provides capacity building support, facilitation and training for a variety of nonprofit organizations across New York State.

Job duties for the Vice President of Nonprofit Capacity Building include providing direct training and consultation for nonprofits, overseeing the department of staff who lead similar projects (Organizational Development Services), including supervising those staff and coordinating consultants, and helping to develop services and resources to meet nonprofits’ evolving needs.

Job Summary: Develop, promote, and oversee implementation of the full range of nonprofit management and governance services, including strategic planning, needs assessments, board development, program evaluation, staff and operations analysis, fund development strategy, and communications and marketing planning.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct nonprofit management and governance technical assistance and training services for nonprofits, including retreat facilitation for nonprofit boards and staff.
  • Supervise capacity building staff and independent consultants providing support listed above.
  • Coordinate and manage management and governance technical assistance, coaching and providing training to staff as needed.
  • Assess organizational capacity building needs and assign and coordinate appropriate staff.
  • Participate as an active member of the NYCON management team, including work with the Chief Executive Officer and other management staff to evaluate and adapt program activities as needed to best meet the evolving needs of the sector and NYCON’s strategic plan.
  • Work with colleagues in other departments and affiliates to design, develop and lead sessions and curriculum for events.
  • Keep updated on relevant research and current events affecting the nonprofit sector.
  • Evaluate supervised programs for effectiveness, making changes as needed.
  • Create cost proposals and work with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer to create and monitor the Organizational Development Services department’s annual budget.
  • Contribute and develop grant applications as requested.
  • Attend and report to NYCON board and committee meetings as needed.
  • Provide program guidance, coordination, oversight, and grant management support for grant-funded projects.
  • Provide staff support and/or represent NYCON with community networks, coalitions, and at community meetings.
  • Represent NYCON and present/otherwise contribute as needed at meetings, conferences, and other functions.
  • Perform other duties required to fulfill the goals and objectives of NYCON, as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time, 35-hour workweek; exempt, professional

Qualifications: Graduate degree in relevant field or bachelor’s degree with commensurate experience; strong interpersonal written and verbal communication skills and a passion for helping nonprofits.

Experience: 5-10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including as a facilitator and trainer; experience with evaluation, nonprofit management, board development, grant management required. Previous supervisory experience and fundraising experience desired. Salesforce experience and experience with community-based research projects and nonprofit mergers helpful.

Salary, Benefits and Schedule:

  • $70,000 annual salary
  • Remote Work, up to Full-Time (after satisfactory orientation, with the exception of NYCON events and in-person client project work); New York State residency is required, as is travel throughout NYS
