Pharmacy Financial Counselor

Our Pharmacy Financial Counselors play a critical role in helping patients navigate medication costs, insurance coverage, and financial assistance programs, ensuring they can access life-saving treatments without unnecessary financial barriers.
In This Role, You Will
- Review prescription requests processed through the onsite pharmacy dispensary and ev aluate patient insurance benefits and out-of-pocket costs.
- Contact patients to explain medication co-pays, financial responsibility, and available assistance options.
- Assist patients with Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) through non-profit organizations and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
- Research and document financial assistance opportunities using the AssistPoint portal and ensure proper documentation within OncoEMR.
- Register patients for co-pay assistance programs, drug replacement programs, and manufacturer support programs when applicable.
- Provide guidance during Open Enrollment periods, including education on Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicaid NYS, and NY Exchange plans.
- Update insurance and benefit information in systems including Candid and OncoEMR and verify patient coverage details.
- Work closely with the onsite pharmacy team, authorization team, and revenue cycle leadership to ensure medications are approved prior to dispensing.
- Coordinate with front desk teams to ensure patient demographics and insurance information remain current.
- Assist with same-day or next-day treatment authorizations when necessary.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient and employee information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in the healthcare field, preferably in a clinical office or medical business office setting.
- Knowledge of insurance requirements, ICD-10 and CPT coding, and healthcare billing processes.
- Experience using practice management systems, EMRs, and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with patients, physicians, insurance providers, and internal teams.
- Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and manage complex tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Ability to communicate in a calm, professional, and compassionate manner with patients.
