Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Major Gifts cultivates, stewards, and solicits a dynamic portfolio of 200 individual donors and prospects contributing four- and five-figure gifts annually, including but not limited to members of the Garden Patrons program and contributors to NYBG's fundraising events. They are an enterprising frontline fundraiser and an enthusiastic advocate for NYBG's work and mission.

Partnership is vital to this position's success. As such, the Assistant Director is expected to be a collaborative and strategic member of the Institutional Advancement department and the Individual Giving team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a dynamic portfolio of 200 individual donors to ensure their renewed and increased support, with progressive annual revenue, commitment, and donor-activity goals for this portfolio.
  • Proactively identify and cultivate new individual donors to the Garden Patrons Program, special events, and other strategic NYBG initiatives.
  • Leverage donor research and institutional lists to help develop and produce new fundraising strategies.
  • Maintain current and accurate records in database, tracking documents, and files.
  • Develop clear and compelling funding proposals that make a strong a case for support of NYBG's diverse projects and programs. Strategically combine and adapt narrative copy, program budgets, photos, and other assets, as needed, to articulate a personalized and persuasive case for support.
  • Support the planning and production of fundraising events, appeals, and campaigns as assigned, including drafting written communications, staffing events, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of fundraising, nonprofit membership, or job-related experience.
  • Experience closing gifts of $10,000 or greater.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, sharp attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan and balance multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Propriety, thoughtfulness, sound judgment, and discretion.
  • Interest and capacity to work with a multi-generational and diverse identity environment, inclusive of donors, staff, volunteer leaders, consultants, and vendors.
  • Excellent persuasive writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Writing samples will be required.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings/ weekends for events and donor visits.
  • Driver's license.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred Experience And Skills

  • 5 or more years of fundraising, nonprofit membership, or job-related experience, ideally at a comparable cultural institution and/or environmental, scientific, or educational non-profit.
  • Significant experience in donor/prospect research.
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge software.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand; walk; sit; use hands, the employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate or loud work conditions.

Baseline Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the range of $75,000-$79,000.
