Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lighting Specialist oversees all aspects of New World Symphony’s (NWS’s) institutional lighting operations for performances, events, and other activities at the New World Center (NWC) for both NWS and its external partners and rental clients.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

65%: Lighting Operations

  • As directed by the Technical Director, manage all aspects of institutional lighting design and operations, including design strategies and scheduling
  • Oversee lighting operations for all institutional activities and events; serve as primary lighting board operator projects and events
  • Liaise with rental clients and other external parties regarding lighting-related activities for their events at NWC and adjacent SoundScape Park; oversee lighting-related activities for select rental events
  • Liaise with visiting lighting and video artists, and provide necessary technical information and production support to ensure effective presentation of their work
  • As directed by the Technical Director, assist in all lighting hang & focus, programming, and other lighting/electrics work calls; operate followspots as necessary

20%: Equipment and Facility Maintenance

  • In collaboration with the Technical Director, oversee functional integrity of all lighting equipment and infrastructure throughout NWC by performing routine maintenance and repairs, managing externally performed repairs, and recommending and managing future lighting-related equipment purchases and rentals
  • In collaboration with the Technical Director, oversee and maintain venue lighting documentation and paperwork, including lighting plots, patch information, and other production documentation to support institutional and rental activities

10%: Performance and Event Logistics

  • As directed by the Technical Director, assist other production staff in timely execution of production logistics and operations including load-in, setup, operation, changeover, tear-down, and load-out of stage equipment (including staging, lighting, audio, and video systems) for rehearsals, events, and performances for both New World Symphony and external/rental clients and partners held at the New World Center, as well as for NWS events and productions elsewhere in the Miami area and on domestic and international tours

5%: Administrative/Other Duties

  • Develop and manage lighting equipment and design-related budgets in consultation with Vice President, Program Operations; monitor and provide initial approval of lighting-related check requests, purchase orders and expense reports
  • Participate in weekly departmental and other production meetings
  • Assist in other departmental projects and support other team members as necessary and required
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in show production or another related field; minimum of three to five years of relevant experience at an event production company, music school, orchestra, touring company or other performing arts organization; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated skill with theatrical lighting equipment specifically intelligent and moving head fixtures, GrandMA2/3 lighting consoles, DMX and basic understanding of lighting networking protocols such as sACN, and artNET
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of three-phase power and related systems
  • Demonstrated skill with Vectorworks, AutoCAD & Lightwright software
  • Basic knowledge of video projection systems, audio equipment and sound reinforcement
  • General knowledge of performance and event conventions, terminology and backstage protocols
  • Basic knowledge of musical performance conventions and forms; basic music/score reading and familiarity with classical music preferred
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word; experience with the Office 365 preferred
  • Ability to interpret diagrams, drawings, stage plots, input lists, equipment layouts, and other production documents
  • Strong teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and time-sensitive decision-making skills
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with colleagues, Fellows, artists, rental clients, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Passion for the mission of NWS and commitment to its values of community, respect, excellence, accountability and trust

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Constantly moves, transports, positions, and removes items such as chairs, risers, boxes, tables, instruments, audio equipment, lighting instruments, cabling, and other items that may be bulky or heavy (up to 50 pounds); remains in a stationary position for less than 20% of time when actively performing essential job functions
  • Regularly ascends and descends stairs and stepladders
  • Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions in South Florida during event setups and operations
