The Prevention Specialist assists county drug prevention coalitions to effectively implement evidence based prevention strategies and relevant prevention programs, policies and ordinances. The Prevention Specialist ensures the goals of reducing the negative consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) as well as mental health promotion and suicide in the community. The Prevention Specialist is a positive team player that promotes a culture of inclusion and participation.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health Administration, Public Policy Administration, Health Communications or related field
- Shall be certified by the Kentucky Certification Board for Prevention Professionals as an International Certified Prevention Specialist within thirty-six (36) months of date of hire
- Valid driver’s license, reliable operating transportation, and proof of current auto insurance
Preferred Education and Experience
- Strong Familiarity with Fayette county and surrounding areas
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, community supports and ability to work well in a team environment

Collaboration and Communication
- Utilize SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework: Needs Assessment, Capacity Building, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, Sustainability and Cultural Competence
- Assist community coalitions in developing and implementing effective prevention programs/strategies
- Organize communities to build coalitions and provide prevention training to individuals, agencies, or groups within the community
- Mobilize community members to develop prevention policies within their community
- Plan and implement individual community prevention programs
- Provide technical assistance, consultation and information on ATOD, mental health promotion and Suicide Prevention
- Assist in conducting community needs assessment
- Assist in evaluating effectiveness and outcomes of prevention programs/strategies
- Identify financial resources and provide technical assistance and information to secure funding for community prevention programs/strategies
