Intake Registered Nurse Nightshift

The New River Valley Regional Jail (NRVRJ) located in Dublin, Virginia and serves the counties of Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Pulaski, Wythe and the City of Radford, VA. The building houses administrative offices, a magistrate’s office, public and professional visiting areas, kitchen, laundry, library, classrooms, and medical units and currently houses over 800 inmates.

The NRVRJ is currently seeking a full and part time Registered Nurse to provide quality nursing care to incarcerated persons and perform a variety of healthcare and diagnostic procedures within the scope of your licensure.

Duties

· Completes intake screen, physical assessment, PPD screen and Trustee Physical form on all inmates following the completion of the security screen when entering the jail.

· Insures that all inmates have a visual acuity as part of the physical assessment.

· Verifies inmate medications by pill bottle, pharmacy, transfer paperwork or records from prescribing provider.

· Orders and prepares all medications to be administered at the next available med-pass. If necessary the intake nurse will administer medications if a dose has been missed.

· Initiates the detox process for any at risk inmates whether or not the inmate has completed the booking process.

· Insures that the proper forms (CIWA, COWS) have been completed and added to the detox book in the medical department by shift end.

· Completes all transfer paperwork when notified by the records department.

· Maintains the health and well-being of all inmates housed in the booking area.

· Documents nursing encounters using the SOAP form of charting as required by policy and procedure.

· Communicates information to nursing staff, physician, supervisory personnel and other staff as necessary.

· Reports all significant illnesses / diseases to the nursing supervisor once screen is completed including pregnancy and HIV.

· Respects dignity and confidentiality of patients.

· Attends mandatory staff meetings and training.

· Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

· Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

· Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

· Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.

Experience: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a nurse

Preferred: Mental Health or Correctional experience

Education:

Must have successfully graduated from an accredited school of nursing program and have/or be awaiting Virginia licensure as a Registered Nurse.
