Posted: September 11, 2026 LOCATED IN CARLSBAD, NM POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TITLE: PROFESSIONAL INTERN DEPT: NATIONAL CAVE AND KARST INSTITUTE REG LIMITED TERM  TEMP  FULL TIME  PART TIME  STARTING RATE or SALARY RANGE $ $48,000 - $61,800 Employees being promoted to a higher classified position receive the minimum for the position or a pay rate adjustment of 8% whichever is greater. All regular positions also entitle the employee to several benefits including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement which is largely paid by New Mexico Tech for the employee and dependents. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision and mentorship of professional staff and/or faculty, the employee undertakes a range of on- going activities and assigned projects of varying levels of professional complexity focused on cave resource management. This is a developmental, fixed-term (typically 1-2 years) career-path position that is restricted to graduates of accredited university Bachelors or Masters programs who have obtained their degrees no earlier than 5 years prior to the date of hire. JOB FUNCTIONS: Under direction of professional staff, conducts/facilitates NPS -focused cave and karst technical assistance projects in collaboration with natural resources specialists and subject matter experts. This includes projects that involve risk management, inventory, management plans, mapping, data management, environmental impacts, restoration, emerging threats, etc. Completion of projects includes providing timely technical reports and evaluations to parks and other collaborators. Participate in roundtable sessions and interdisciplinary working groups to identify broad management needs and develop consistent practices across NPS units. Participate in NPS cave and karst resource specialist quarterly meetings. Produce management aids for cave and karst managers. Assists other NCKRI staff in C&K research, education, academic, or administrative projects with guidance from respective program leads. Represents NCKRI and NPS at professional meetings and facilitates cave and karst-related trainings. Other responsibilities as assigned REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Natural Science, Geology, Biology, Physical Science or related field . Ability to obtain a New Mexico Driver’s License. Excellent ability to communicate natural resource management needs, goals, science, and policy, both orally and in w riting, using standard computer software. Ability to work collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team. Experience working in caves with varying levels of access from accessible show caves to unexplored cave passages. Experience producing professional reports, papers, graphics, etc. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in Natu ral Resources or related fields. Cave & Karst resource knowledge. Knowledge of laws, policies, guidelines, and best practices relevant to cave and k arst management on public lands. Experience collaborating with research scientists on research that is directly applicable to resource management.
