The Executive Director of the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame shall be responsible to the President.  Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the Museum, including receptions, tours, membership, artifacts, management, interpretation, fundraising, newsletters, inventory, accessioning and purging, budget, payroll, purchases, and research.
  • Identifies, applies for, manages, and maintains grants; seeks outside funding sources to aid and enhance the annual operational cost of the Museum.
  • Develops an overall marketing strategy for the Museum; manages the marketing budget; oversees and participates in the creation of printed, radio, and online media advertising; writes press releases and public service announcements.
  • Creates and manages the Museum's weekly e-newsletter.
  • Signs, with the President of the Junior College, and executes contracts for the Museum.
  • Works hand-in-hand with the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame (LCCHF) Board of Directors to promote and support the mission and vision of the LCCHF.
  • Provides all reports to appropriate agencies, foundations, and individuals.
  • Supervises full-time museum employees and oversees part-time museum employees.
  • Works with the Western Heritage Museum Advisory Board and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame Board to plan and design for the future of the Museum.
  • Advises the president in matters of policy concerning the Museum.
  • Works with the LCCHF to plan and execute a fair booth at the annual Lea County Fair.
  • Works with the LCCHF to plan and execute an annual meeting of the membership and annual business meeting in November
  • Works with the LCCHF Board to implement the annual selection and induction of new members into the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the selection of honorees as established by the LCCHF Board.
  • Works with New Mexico Junior College staff to maintain the building, grounds, and significant equipment.
  • Participates in a process of continual personal and professional improvement.
  • Maintains a positive presence in the community and museum world.
  • Uphold the Museum’s commitment to ethical standards, legal responsibilities, and best practices established by museum accreditation and state, federal, and international law.
  • Actively participates in the institutional goals and objectives designed to support the mission of the college.
  • Serves on college committees as assigned.
  • Reports to the New Mexico Junior College President.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.
  • Master’s degree in Museum Studies or related field.
  • Six (6) years of experience as a museum professional, which includes supervisory responsibilities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Normal hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm.  Evenings and weekends are required as needed for events.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.  This position is not eligible for Visa Sponsorship.This is a twelve-month exempt position.
