Educational Assistant - Part-time 0.6FTE (three days/24 hours per week)

Summary of position:  This employee is responsible for assisting special education teachers in lesson planning, delivery as well as classroom and playground supervision.

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

School Personnel Act Classification: Licensed

Contracted or “at-will” employment:  Contracted

Immediate supervisor:  Special Education teacher

Compensation:  Hourly wages, according to placement on NMIS Educational Assistant Pay Scale, see Appendix 2.

Hours: Full-time employees must be present on campus 7:45 - 3:45 M-F  minus 30 minute unpaid lunch daily; not to exceed 40 hours/week minus 30 minute lunch daily, per dates shown on annual NMIS Instructional Calendar.   Part-time employees will have varied on-campus required hours/days proportional to their full time equivalency as agreed upon between administrator and employee.

Receives Paid Personal Leave under NMIS Policy:  Yes

Certification/Educational Qualifications:

  • Possess a current NMPED issued Educational Assistant License
  • Current trainings in accordance with this Employee Handbook and GC Policy (e.g. Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.) 
  • Current background check in compliance with school policy.

Physical/Mental Qualifications

  • Be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.
  • Be able to stand for 30 consecutive minutes.
  • Be able to safely and effectively supervise groups of students in varied conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Be fluent in English and Spanish, if placed in bilingual assignment

Job Duties

Essential functions:  An Educational Assistant must do the following, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  1. Be physically present on campus according to work schedule.
  2. Abide by all NMIS school policies procedures, NMIS Employee Handbook, and relevant sections of New Mexico Statute (NMSA) and code (NMAC).
  3. Enforce all NMIS student policies and community policies and directives found in Family Handbook.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  5. Maintain a standard of care appropriate for the maturity level of students under supervision.
  6. Support student learning in any way deemed appropriate by the teacher.
  7. Assist with clerical teacher duties.
  8. Provide safe and effective supervision of students before, during, and after school in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors.
  9. Cover classes when substitute teacher is not available.
  10. Work with small groups at teacher discretion.
  11. Monitor and direct student activity in accordance with the student's IEP (when applicable), and the school's policies and procedures.
  12. Display desire to work with students and responds to students as individuals.
  13. Maintain accurate records of student progress.
  14. Be proactive and diligent in classroom management strategies and uphold the discipline policy of NMIS.
  15. Assist in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments as directed by school administration.
  16. Provide specialized physical assistance as needed to students with Individualized Education Plans or Section 504 Plans.
  17. Utilize a diverse array of techniques and modalities in order to maximize a student's academic and personal outcomes.
  18. Participate regularly in grade level and staff meetings. Such meetings may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  19. Participate in school-provided professional development sessions, as required.  Such sessions may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  20. Attend NMIS community events as directed by school administration, that may be on- or off-campus and may extend beyond on-campus required hours.

Additional functions:  An Educational Assistant is expected to to the following additional functions to adequately complete the duties of the position.

 

  1. Participate in school-provided professional development sessions, as required.  Such sessions may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  2. Attend field trips with classroom and assist to keep children safe while off campus.
  3. Work collaborative with all staff members
  4. Attend NMIS community events as directed by school administration, that may be on- or off-campus and may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  5. Other duties as assigned by Special Education Director.

Salary : $28,800 - $35,200
