The New Mexico Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Prevention Program has as its primary goal the reduction and prevention of the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV infection. The STD Program provides statewide consultation and technical assistance, partner services, screening, surveillance, health care provider education, case management, and partner notification for reportable STDs in the state.

Why does the job exist?

This position is a supervisory position that will oversee the DIS team in SE Region.

Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS) further the department's mission to promote health and improve health outcomes by conducting partner services and disease investigation for HIV and other reportable sexually transmitted diseases (STD) to break the chain of infection and reduce disease incidence.

Core tasks for DIS include conducting STD surveillance and tracking, offering testing and screening for contacts to disease and persons at high risk, doing community outreach to populations with higher disease incidence, and interviewing persons with STD and their partners to ensure timely and effective treatment. DIS also support other infectious disease activities such as harm reduction, syringe services, opiate overdose prevention education and hepatitis screening and referral.

How does it get done?

Directs and oversees day-to-day functions of Disease Prevention Specialist (DPS) team to achieve statewide and regional HIV, STI and other infectious disease priorities.

Ensures prioritization of disease follow-up based on established hierarchy of reportable STIs and HIV.

Provides supervision and workforce development by reviewing program activities and adjusting as needed to assure successful performance.

Evaluates performance of Disease Intervention Specialists in achieving individual goals contributing to the overall Disease Prevention Team performance.

Assures appropriate training certifications and re-certifications for existing staff and new hires.

Facilitates monthly staff meetings to assure timely & accurate communication and smooth working environment. Assures employee evaluations for all employees are in place and that evaluations are conducted within the parameters of the DOH and SPO personnel policies and the CWA contract.

Generates reports in PRISM and conduct audits and case reviews to ensure quality services and achievement of objectives related to partner indices (PI) and timely interviews.

Interacts with laboratories, hospitals and other health care providers to ensure timely STI surveillance oversight, reporting and follow-up of notifiable STIs and other infections.

Provides information to stakeholders (academic institutions/private provider offices/correctional institutions/hospitals) on an 'as-needed' basis, and works with program to identify provider visit needs.

This is for the communities in the SE Region of 10 Public Health Offices.

Ideal Candidate

  • 3 years of supervisory experience
  • 3 years minimum working with Infectious Diseases
  • Excellent communication skills
  • 3 years minimum in public speaking, educational presentations and/or health-related training
  • Proficiency in multiple computer applications
  • Experience in a public health setting with a focus on prevention
  • Experience working in local communities on strategies to increase opportunities for healthy lifestyles
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently
  • Strong commitment to punctuality and schedule adherence, ensuring timely follow-up and case resolution

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or Education and two (2) years of experience in a health-related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VTD) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Conduct Field Investigations across the Northwest Region.

Occasional travel within the state to various regions will be necessary for statewide meetings, conferences, and similar events. Ability to lift up to forty (40) lbs.

Work on the Mobile Unit, includes driving, for outreach events in various communities in the SE Region. Mobile Unit outreach events occur in parking lots of facilities; therefore, being outside in reasonable weather conditions would be probable.
