The NM Department of Health (DOH) works to ensure health equity, working with partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico.
The NM Vital Records and Health Statistics (NMVRHS) collects, registers, and issues copies of birth and death certificates; collects information and reports on spontaneous fetal deaths; processes acknowledgments of paternity and maintains the Putative Father Registry. NMVRHS analyzes and calculates vital statistics; prepares data files for public health surveillance, health researchers, and state and federal agencies; and publishes health statistics and analytical research reports related to birth and death data.

The NMVRHS epidemiologist will analyze the vital records statistical files on deaths, live births, and fetal deaths; provide data files and collaborate with other analysts and researchers; produce the Vital Statistics Annual Reports and other analytical or research reports and respond to requests for data on vital events.
How does it get done?
Key Responsibilities of the position include preparing vital records data files; analyzing vital records data; calculating statistics; linking data files; writing reports; and presenting on vital records data, systems and analytical projects. The NMVRHS epidemiologist will collaborate with other staff and serve as an expert on vital records data and health statistics. This position will also respond to data requests from Department of Health colleagues, outside researchers, and the public.

Customers are the public and federal, state, tribal, university, and non-profit researchers.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate should be able to to plan, design, develop, and conduct research that ties demographic and social factors to health outcomes. The ideal candidate will have education and experience in public health, epidemiology, demography, social science, and/or statistics. They should have strong skills in research design, statistical analysis, writing, and presenting. In addition to technical skills, the candidate should be able to collaborate well with others through effective listening, problem solving, and a commitment to public service.
NMVRHS has historically used SAS for analysis and file preparation, and is in the process of moving to R. While we prefer someone with SAS or R skills, we understand that some researchers use other analytical programs such as SPSS, SQL and Python, so the ability and initiative to to learn SAS or R is important.
Minimum Qualification
Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and one (1) year in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Office setting and extensive computer usage. Position is located in Santa Fe and is Monday-Friday 8-5.
