Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for conducting proficiency tests, standard material characterizations, potential event exercises, real-world event responses, and other sample analyses for the Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) section. Position also supports the staff manager with supervising personnel, reporting results, maintaining quality control, and developing and validating analytical methods.


How does it get done?

The Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) Section is federally funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is 1 of 10 Level 1 laboratories within the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C) in the country. Key responsibilities include performing proficiency tests, method development and validations, standard material characterizations, potential event as well as event exercise responses, and other analyses for samples sent to the section.


The section staff perform mass spectrometric analyses of blood, urine, and serum for chemical agents and their metabolites. They also screen unknown samples for possible hazardous chemical agents submitted by first responders. This position will proficiently perform multiple chemical analyses and will be skilled in the use of liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Other tasks will include performing supply requisitioning and inventory to ensure continuing section capability as well as performance

The Centers for Disease Control, Public Health Emergency Preparedness federal Grant for New Mexico and the State Biomonitoring Programs.


Ideal Candidate

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related field. Two years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Possesses a background in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry, testing blood, urine and/or serum specimens for chemical analytes or their metabolites using gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Experience in separation science and method development, performing standard maintenance on laboratory instrumentation, writing and reviewing standard operating procedures.


Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related field, and four (4) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.


Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42CFR73, Possession, Use, and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins. Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, able to differentiate colors, use of sterile techniques, and good manual dexterity.


Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high-pressure gas cylinders. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
