DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Lending and Portfolio Management, the Commercial Underwriter is responsible for evaluating commercial loan applications to determine the creditworthiness of the Business entities and Personal Guarantors. This role analyzes financial information, assesses collateral, identifies potential risks, and prepares comprehensive credit recommendations that support sound lending decisions while providing excellent service to internal departments and external developers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Analyze commercial loan applications, financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, and credit reports.
· Evaluate borrowing entities' guarantor creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and overall financial strength.
· Assess collateral values and ensure adequate security for the loan request.
· Perform financial ratio analysis, cash flow analysis, and debt service coverage calculations (DSCR).
· Identify and evaluate credit risks and recommend appropriate loan structures, conditions, or mitigants.
· Prepare detailed credit memorandums and underwriting recommendations for loan approval.
· Ensure compliance with NJRA lending policies and regulatory requirements.
· Communicate underwriting conditions and documentation needs to the Division of Business Development, including the Director and CEO & Ex. Director.
· Stay informed of industry trends, market conditions, and changes in commercial lending regulations.
· Support portfolio quality through sound underwriting and risk management practices.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of five to seven years’ experience working in a commercial bank or financial service industry.
SKILLS
- Experience with banking, asset management, and underwriting.
- Experience in loan documentation and commitment letter preparation.
- Strong ability to interpret and draft legal documents and convey legal concepts clearly.
· Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
· Advanced MS Excel knowledge
· Experience on The Mortgage Office (TMO) platform preferred.
