What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEAM LEADER / SUPERVISOR position at NEW HORIZONS?
The Ranch Team Leader works in partnership with the Ranch Director and clinical leadership to support the daily care, safety, and treatment environment for kids served at New Horizons. This role requires a highly engaged, visible presence on the ranch with consistent interaction with youth and staff. The Team Leader is a hands-on leader who models the New Horizons philosophy of Keeping Kids First in action, guiding staff through real-time situations, supporting therapeutic interventions, and helping create a safe, structured, healing environment.
The Team Leader is first and foremost a coach and mentor to Direct Care Staff — teaching, modeling, encouraging, and helping others grow in skill and confidence. Through de-escalation, problem-solving, and steady leadership, the Team Leader helps staff respond to challenges in ways that are trauma-informed, relationship-based, and aligned with the agency’s treatment model. The Ranch Team Leader is committed to keeping kids safe from abuse, neglect, and exploitation and ensures that safety, dignity, and emotional well-being remain the priority in every interaction and decision.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Model New Horizons’ philosophy, policies, and trauma-informed practices in daily interactions with kids and staff
- Coach, teach, mentor, and support Direct Care Staff in building skills related to de-escalation, engagement, and therapeutic response
- Provide real-time guidance and leadership during challenging behaviors, crises, or emotionally heightened situations
- Serve as a positive role model for professionalism, emotional regulation, and relationship-based care
- Support Direct Care Staff in daily program duties and ensure consistency and quality of care across shifts
- Oversee shift staffing to ensure required ratios are met and collaborate with the Director to ensure appropriate coverage
- Interview, orient, train, evaluate, and supervise program staff with a focus on development and performance improvement
- Acts as the Behavior Support Specialist for kids in program.
- Lead staff in the implementation of treatment plans and ensure interventions are applied appropriately in daily care
- Ensure relevant information is communicated to staff to support effective therapeutic interventions
- Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment while on shift
- Ensure staff remain current with all required state and contract trainings
- Establish and maintain rapport with kids and staff to support a positive milieu
- Collaborate with Case Managers, Therapists, the Director, and Administrator to ensure coordinated care
- Ensure medications are administered and documented correctly in accordance with policy
- Ensure vehicles, medications, and supplies are secured according to standards and procedures
- Ensure medical appointments, visits, and off-campus trips occur safely, timely, and in accordance with policies
- Participate actively in each child’s treatment team meetings
- Maintain confidentiality of children’s and staff’s protected health information and comply with HIPAA regulations
- Support ongoing professional growth and development for both self and staff
- Ensure required documentation (daily notes, plans, incident reports, etc.) are completed accurately and timely
- Provide 24-hour on-call coverage as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by Director, Administrator, COO, or CEO
Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in residential child-care treatment, with a proven history of modeling professional behavior, supporting teammates, and informally leading in high-stress or crisis situations.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, guide, and positively influence peers while maintaining professionalism and emotional regulation.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear direction and supportive feedback to staff.
- Highly organized, dependable, and able to balance supervision responsibilities with direct engagement in the program environment.
- Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation that demonstrates sound judgment and the ability to support kids and staff through emotionally intense or challenging situations.
- Commitment to trauma-informed care, team collaboration, and continued professional growth.
Working Conditions
This position works in a mixed indoor and outdoor residential treatment environment with frequent movement throughout the ranch. The role involves continuous interaction with children and staff in a fast-paced, active setting that may include emotionally intense or crisis situations. The schedule requires flexibility, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities, to ensure consistent support and supervision within the program.
Physical Requirements
The Team Leader must be able to meet the physical demands of a residential treatment environment, including considerable walking, standing, and movement throughout shifts. The role requires the ability to hear and assess situations quickly, respond promptly, and provide First Aid and CPR when needed. The employee must be able to safely intervene when a child poses a danger to themselves or others, which may include the use of approved physical restraint techniques in accordance with training and agency policy.
