New Horizons Thrift Stores are a ministry of New Horizons Ministries. Our thrift stores exist to support the work of Breaking the Cycle of Incarcation through meaningful work, hospitality, and stewardship.
The Assistant Manager provides shift leadership and ensures the store operates smoothly, safely, and hospitably during assigned shifts. This role focuses on real-time execution, team support, and maintaining store-wide standards.
The Assistant Manager supports the Store Manager by carrying out established systems, priorities, and expectations. While Assistant Managers lead during their shifts, long-term systems, performance management, and staffing decisions remain the responsibility of the Store Manager.
In addition to operational leadership, the Assistant Manager serves as a ministry team member of New Horizons Ministries and plays an active role in supporting a Christ-centered, values-driven culture within the store.
Additional tasks may be assigned at times by your supervisor. Consideration will be given to your current workload and duties.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Shift Leadership and Operations
- o Oversee store operations across all departments during assigned shifts
- o Set daily priorities and adjust labor and coverage in real time
- o Manage breaks and ensure adequate coverage
- o Support Department Leads in executing daily priorities
- o Open and close the store following established procedures
- o Make real-time operational decisions to keep the store running smoothly
- Guest and Donor Experience
- o Support a welcoming, hospitable experience for guests and donors
- o Handle guest concerns and escalations during the shift
- o Ensure donors are greeted and supported at donation drop-off
- o Model friendly service and engagement standards
- Store Standards and Execution
- o Enforce store-wide standards for cleanliness, safety, and presentation
- o Ensure departments are guest-ready throughout the shift
- o Address immediate operational or presentation issues as they arise
- o Communicate gaps or concerns to the Store Manager
- Team Support and Leadership
- o Provide direction and support to team members during the shift
- o Reinforce expectations and daily priorities
- o Offer in-the-moment coaching and feedback
- o Support a positive, respectful team environment
- Ministry Leadership and Culture Support
- o Serve as an active ministry team member of New Horizons Ministries
- o Participate in staff spiritual development opportunities as appropriate
- o Support team devotions and moments of spiritual reflection as directed by store leadership
- o Model Christ-centered leadership, humility, integrity, and respect in daily interactions
- o Help foster a workplace culture that reflects the mission, values, and redemptive purpose of New Horizons Ministries
Workplace Environment
Physical Conditions
- Work is performed indoors or outdoors in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Exposure to dust, cleaning supplies, changing temperatures, and used goods is common.
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and repetitive movements
- Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, either alone or with assistance
Work Schedule
- Monday through Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Expect occasional evening, holiday, and weekend shifts.
- A minimum of one evening shift and one Saturday shift per month will be scheduled in place of a regular shift.

Experience/Training Required:
Formal education is not required. Relevant experience in retail, customer service, operations, or people leadership is helpful but not required. Successful candidates demonstrate a strong learning posture, openness to coaching, and the ability to operate within established systems and expectations.
Compensation/Benefits:
Full-time
This is a non-exempt full-time position. Overtime pay rate applies for time worked over 40 hours per week.
Paid Medical Leave, MEC, and Life Insurance are included, optional health benefits include Vision, and HDHP. Paid vacation begins to accrue after 30 days.
Compensation will be paid twice a month, on the 7th and 21st of each month.
