GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Instruct students, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement in special needs students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide individual and group physical education to students with autism, intellectual disabilities, gross motor deficits, and delays.

Assess, design, and implement IEP goals and objectives related to gross motor delays, fitness, partner play/turn-taking, and sportsmanship.

Confer and cooperate in implementing behavioral interventions for students as developed by the special education teacher and behavior specialist.

Confer and collaborate with the Speech Therapy Team to ensure each student has immediate access to communication systems and vocabulary of each lesson, including visuals for equipment, requests for turns, and for topic-related expressions (such as “Great catch!”, “Can I have a turn?”, and “This is fun!”)

Assume additional responsibilities to meet fitness and wellness program needs as determined by the Program Coordinator.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor or Master’s degree in Physical Education.

Experience in Special Education and working with students with autism, intellectual disabilities, gross motor delays, as well as physical challenges such as wheelchair use, seizures, amputees, visual and hearing impairments, and other health impairments are desired.

Must have Virginia Department of Education Teacher Licensure with an endorsement in Physical Education K-12, First Aid/CPR AED Certified. Must hold an Autism Fitness Certified Practitioner certification or be willing to get this certification within one year of employment.
