Summary

A Preschool Teacher is responsible for the general supervision and management of a class of children between the ages of 2 and 5. A Preschool Teacher must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children, in the field of early childhood education and child development, and must meet the State of Hawaii licensing requirements. A Preschool Teacher must be a sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate in a Christian-like manner to both children and adults and who is able to provide a safe, stimulating environment where children are encouraged to develop physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually.



Duties

Instructional

  • Teaches assigned classes with diligence and preparation.
  • Develops quarterly and semester lesson plans and learning objectives based on curriculum guides.
  • Integrates Biblical principles and a Christian worldview across all subject areas.
  • Utilizes varied instructional strategies to engage students and meet curricular goals within the framework of the school’s philosophy.
  • Designs a program of study that, as much as possible, addresses the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, encouraging each to reach their full potential.
  • Coordinates and plans excursions, following the Field Trip Protocols, collectively with a teaching team for field trips, guest speakers, and media to enhance instruction and provide extension of learning opportunities.
  • Regularly assesses student learning and provides timely progress reports.
  • Maintains effective classroom management both in and outside the classroom.
  • Prepares comprehensive materials and guidance for substitute teachers to ensure instructional continuity.

Non-Instructional
  • Acknowledges parents as the primary educators before God and partners with them in their child’s educational journey.
  • Nurtures the whole child—spiritually, intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Supports the administration by adhering to school policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Able to positively supervise and mentor aides and other personnel (support staff, volunteers, etc.)
  • Maintains accurate and timely attendance and academic records to track student progress.
  • Communicates regularly with students, parents, and administration regarding student performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communications to parents, students and staff, through conferences, formal and informal meetings, notes, newsletters, end of year written report on children and injury reports as needed.
  • Keeps the classroom clean, organized, and visually engaging, with attention to bulletin boards, storage, and layout.
  • Prepares the classroom each morning for learning and ensures it is ready for after-school ministry use.

Professional
  • Pursues professional development and participates in performance evaluations:
  • Complete at least 16 hours of training annually to maintain DHS certification.
  • Complete training annually in Principles and Practices of Christian Early Education, and Biblical Studies to maintain ACSI requirements.
  • Ability to effectively plan and meet short timelines and changing conditions.
  • Maintains a teachable spirit and seeks guidance from the principal, school elders, pastors, and colleagues as needed.
  • Contributes to administrative and managerial improvements by offering feedback and recommendations.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, having the ability to handle multiple tasks independently with accuracy, speed and composure.
  • Strict adherence to required office and school hours. Working beyond school hours may be required, particularly for special events like Easter and Christmas programs.
  • Actively participates in church/school events such as but not limited to: school plays, outreaches, fundraisers, in-services, retreats, committees, faculty meetings, and PTO events.
  • Understands school emergency protocols and fulfills assigned safety responsibilities.
  • Supports the continuous improvement of the school program through compliance with licensing and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintains confidentiality and refrains from gossip or inappropriate sharing of private information.
  • Carries out additional duties as assigned by administration.

Spiritual
  • Has accepted Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord.
  • Is an active member in good standing of an evangelical church and models a lifestyle consistent with Biblical teaching.
  • Demonstrates spiritual maturity, leadership, and a sense of calling to Christian education.
  • Reflects the mission of the school by honoring Christ in all classes and activities.
  • Lives as a Christlike role model in words, actions, and attitudes.
  • Demonstrates the importance of prayer, scripture memory and study, witnessing, and unity in Christian fellowship.
  • Applies the Matthew 18 principle when resolving conflict.
  • Encourages students in their walk with Christ, guiding them toward salvation, growth in faith, and a sense of purpose in Him.
Personal
  • Is at least 18 years of age.
  • Exhibits Christian character qualities such as enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality.
  • Responds to everyday challenges with emotional stability, objectivity, and a positive attitude.
  • Builds strong relationships with students, families, and staff based on respect and kindness.
  • Submits respectfully to school leadership and demonstrates loyalty to its mission.
  • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with school dress code and as a model of modesty and cleanliness.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively using standard English in both spoken and written form.
  • Represents the school in a positive, professional manner to families and the broader community.
  • Prioritizes teaching responsibilities above outside or volunteer work.
  • Shows a genuine interest in and appreciation for the unique culture and needs of the community.
Other Requirements
  • Is in good health with no significant limitations that would hinder performance or burden the school.
  • Submits proof of a recent physical examination prior to employment; annual updates are recommended.
  • Provides written tuberculosis clearance prior to employment; annual updates are recommended.
  • Report all signs of illness, injury, unusual behavior, or possible abuse to administration (Mandatory Reporters)
  • Maintains a current First Aid/CPR certification.
