Job Description:
The Reading Specialist is a highly-qualified teacher of reading who provides
strategic and intensive pull-out intervention services to regular education students who
require additional support. The focus of the Reading Specialist is to develop a
student-centered system of instruction that closes the achievement gap in reading. The
Reading Specialist has a strong grasp of the nature, extent, and role of phonics
instruction.
Supervision:
Works under the supervision of the principal. The principal, based on results of an
annual performance evaluation, determines consideration for continued employment.
Performance Responsibilities:
Provides research-based, direct instruction in small intervention groups to at-risk students in grades K-6.
Understands and implements a systematic approach to phonics instruction.
Works collaboratively with staff members in using data to make instructional decisions.
Collaborates with the Principal to review student data on a scheduled basis.
Facilitates the coordination of school-wide benchmarks and individual student progress monitoring in collaboration with other interventionists.
Works cooperatively and collaboratively with classroom teachers in planning instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Participates in “child study” team meetings to assist in diagnosing reading strengths/areas of growth for individual students and suggesting appropriate techniques/materials.
Promotes a positive learning environment that includes behavioral management techniques appropriate to the needs of all students.
Supports the Principal’s goals, philosophy, and mission of the school.
Performs all other duties assigned by the principal, within contractual guidelines.

Education and Experience:
MA DESE licensure as a Reading Specialist (all levels)
Experience working as a reading specialist and/or teacher preferred.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
