General Function
Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Senior Director of Youth Development and Sports provides leadership and operational oversight for key branch program areas, working in close partnership with all members of the West Cabarrus staff leadership team. This position is responsible for the supervision and strategic management of Youth Development programs -including summer camp, afterschool, Playhouse, and teen initiatives - and Youth and Adult Sports while collaborating with branch leadership to ensure all programs are safe, high-quality, inclusive, and aligned with the YMCA's mission, values, and strategic objectives.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, servant-hearted leader who embraces the YMCA philosophy, leads by example, and takes pride in doing what it takes to get the job done. This individual will demonstrate strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to build trusting relationships with staff, volunteers, and community partners - ensuring the West Cabarrus YMCA remains a safe, welcoming, and impactful place for all.
Know How
- BS degree in recreation management, business administration, or related field and minimum of four years YMCA work experience or equivalent experience preferred.
- Must be attentive to details, be able to work with and meet deadlines, take initiative to develop and provide information and controls necessary for efficient operations.
- Must have strong skills in human relations, budgeting, sound fiscal management, financial development, program management, volunteer and staff development, committee and board relations and staff supervision.
- Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems and work independently with little supervision.

Principle Responsibilities
- R.O.S.T.E.R. (Recruit, Orient, Supervise, Train, Evaluate and Reward) Assist the Sports Director, and Youth Development Coordinator with the supervision and development of their departmental staff.
- Help develop, manage, and monitor the branch-operating budget and meet or exceed budget targets.
- Guide the development and management of branch programs to meet the needs of the community and achieve association operating objectives.
- Ensure outstanding customer/member service and meet all Association standards.
- Implement YMCA values and mission in all programs and all aspects of branch operations.
- Assist with the branch annual giving campaign and lead in programs areas of direct oversight.
- Help direct staff and volunteers to reach and exceed program quality expectations.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
- Assist with public relations and marketing efforts for all assigned program and branch operations.
- Prepare reports regarding programs, staff development, etc., as needed.
- Oversee management and maintenance of the facility and equipment (program areas, as assigned)
- Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential funding sources, both private and public.
- Lead program staff in increasing quality, participation, and safety of programs.
- Partner with V.P. of Risk and Safety to coordinate safety drills (Fire, Pool, Missing Child, Emergency, etc.) and assist in the development and coordination of EAP trainings for staff.
