About the Internship Role

Under clinical supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the Clinical Intern conducts mental health assessments, provides direct mental health services to members, and participates in consultations with clinical personnel in support of the mental health needs of members in the clinical reentry setting.

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Is pursuing an MSW or is needing to complete their internship to become a master’s level therapist, and eager to apply classroom learning in a real-world clinical setting
  • Is passionate about helping others and believes in the power of second chances
  • Welcomes supervision, feedback, and opportunities for professional growth
  • Demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and a commitment to ethical practice
  • Wants to develop clinical skills while making a meaningful impact in the community

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Provides individual and group counseling to address clinical needs and support successful re-entry
  • Conducts comprehensive and informal mental health assessments to evaluate needs and progress
  • Collaborates with member support services staff to address members’ mental health needs
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and adheres to ethical standards, laws, and behavioral health regulations
  • Completes weekly clinical supervision in accordance with internship agreements
  • Maintains accurate, organized, and up-to-date documentation and data collection systems
  • Submits records, reports, and assignments promptly and efficiently
  • Participates in professional development, applies research-informed practices, and adapts to new approaches while supporting New Freedom’s policies and procedures
  • Performing additional duties, as assigned, to support our mission

What We’re Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Master of Social Work (MSW) program through an approved university or school
  • Eligible to complete a field placement/internship as part of degree requirements
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to ethical practice, professionalism, and client confidentiality
  • Ability to receive feedback, demonstrate initiative, and learn in a fast-paced behavioral health environment

Environment Physical Demands

This position is primarily performed in an outpatient clinical office, classroom, or group-room environment. Responsibilities include member-facing counseling, extended group facilitation, documentation, treatment team meetings, case consultation, and occasional off-site training or community-based activities. Flexible scheduling may occasionally be required based on program or member needs.

  • Periods of sitting, standing, walking, and moving between work areas
  • Extended computer, telephone, documentation, and Electronic Health Record use
  • Ability to facilitate individual and group sessions, including groups lasting two to three hours
  • Ability to observe member behavior and group dynamics and respond appropriately
  • Occasional lifting or carrying of educational or office materials weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to remain calm and follow established procedures when supporting members experiencing emotional or behavioral distress
