Construction Intern (Heavy Infrastructure)

Scope

The Construction Internship provides a tremendous opportunity for a degree seeking individual to learn and becoming familiar with the construction industry. Construction Interns will gain experience in many different aspects of construction within New Enterprise. Depending on length of internship, interns will rotate across the Construction Division through various field assignments. Ideally, this program will help guide interns toward a career path that aligns with their interests and abilities. In addition, this program seeks to provide permanent employment opportunities upon graduation.

Internship Structure

A mentor will be assigned to each intern and will remain with the intern for the duration of the internship. A supervisor will be assigned upon each rotational assignment. In addition, interns will interact with key positions across the Construction Division including Project Managers, General Superintendents, Chief of Surveys, Chief Estimator, Superintendents, Construction Managers, and the President of Construction. These interactions and relationships are intentionally designed to help the intern develop their skillset and grow professionally.

Rotational Assignment Overview

Rotations will vary from office work to field and operational assignments. The primary function in each assignment will be to assist day-to-day processes and operations and create a work product through proper documentation. In addition, all interns will be responsible for learning and adhering to required safety protocols within each assignment.

Travel to and from assignments and jobsites will be required. Travel expenses are reimbursable according to NESL Policy.

Project Management

• Assist Project Manager in the preparation and maintenance of material source of supplies, costing, purchase orders, Subcontractor Agreements, Project Budgets, waste/borrow areas, and value engineering.

• Become proficient in the use of NESL Costing System, Primavera CPM Scheduling, and ECMS (PennDot).

Estimating

• Attend Owner pre-bid meetings for selected bid projects.

• Perform site visits, photographing and documenting existing conditions at bid locations.

• Input appropriate crews (labor, equipment, material, etc.) and productions into estimates applicable to each specific operation.

• Review cost history to provide accurate operational crew and productions into estimates.

• Become proficient in the use and understanding of NESL Estimating System, AGTEK, plans and specifications, and special provisions and standards.

Grade

• Assist in general operations including Storm Drainage Pipe Installation, Finegrading, Excavation and Embankment, Subbase Installation, Drilling and Shooting, Vibration Monitoring, and Structure Backfill.

Structure

• Assist in general operations including Forming and Pouring Bridge Footers, Forming and Pouring Bridge Abutments, Rebar Installation, Deck Pours, Beam Setting, MSE Wall Construction.

Concrete Paving

• Assist in general operations including Mainline Slip Form Paving, Hand Pours, Form Setting, Basket Setting, Ramp Pours, Shoulder Pours, Concrete Pavement Patching.

 HMA Paving

• Assist in general operations including Mainline Full Width Paving and Widening Paving.

Quality Control

• Assist in general operations including Subbase Compaction, Concrete Testing, Asphalt Testing.

Qualifications

• Must be actively enrolled in degree program in business, engineering, or related field.

• Familiarity with construction and construction related activities

• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook

• Knowledge of estimating/scheduling software is a plus

• Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

• Strong math skills and attention to detail
