What are the responsibilities and job description for the Writer position at New England Recruiting Report?

About New England Recruiting Report (NERR)

Founded in 2006 by current CBS Sports Director of Basketball Scouting Adam Finkelstein, the New England Recruiting Report (NERR) is one of the most respected grassroots basketball platforms in the country. NERR provides comprehensive coverage of high school basketball prospects through in-depth writing, scouting evaluations, rankings, and live exposure events for college coaches at all levels of the NCAA.

Since 2023, NERR has been on a significant upward trajectory, expanding its media reach exponentially across social platforms while increasing its annual event output by five times. As NERR continues to grow, so does the opportunity for talented media contributors to build real visibility and influence in the basketball space.

Role Overview

NERR is seeking Regional High School Basketball Correspondents to provide consistent, boots-on-the-ground coverage of the high school basketball scene within their respective regions. Correspondents will serve as trusted voices for their area, reporting on standout performances, emerging prospects, college commitments, and broader regional trends.

This is a highly visible role that allows contributors to grow their personal network, expand their media footprint, and become recognizable voices within the Northeast basketball ecosystem and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Provide regular coverage of high school basketball within your assigned region

  • Highlight standout performances, prospects, and emerging “hidden gems”

  • Report on college commitments and recruitment news

  • Publish weekly round-up articles covering key performances and storylines

  • Assist in identifying prospects and trends relevant to NERR’s scouting and media platforms

  • Represent NERR professionally at games, events, and within the basketball community

Growth & Exposure Opportunities

  • Build a personal byline and media presence through the NERR platform

  • Leverage NERR’s social media channels to grow your name and regional credibility

  • Expand your network with high school coaches, college coaches, media members, and scouts

  • Position yourself as a recognized face of high school basketball in your region

  • Gain experience that aligns directly with careers in scouting, media, broadcasting, or basketball operations

This is a low-commitment, high-reward opportunity. Contributors who maximize the platform, consistency, and access that come with the role tend to see the greatest long-term benefits and future opportunities.

Ideal Candidates

  • Aspiring basketball scouts, writers, analysts, broadcasters, or media personalities

  • College students or recent graduates with an interest in sports media or scouting

  • Individuals already embedded in their local high school basketball scene

  • Strong communicators with a passion for identifying talent and telling compelling stories

  • Self-starters who are comfortable building something over time

Compensation & Academic Credit

This is an unpaid, freelance role. College students may be eligible to receive academic credit, depending on their institution’s requirements.

Applicants should specify the region they are applying for:

  • New England

  • Western/Central New York

  • Western Pennsylvania
