Program Summary

Under the direction of the Orientation Manager, the Clinical Mentor Program Participant is engaged in a structured professional development experience designed to prepare paramedics for future roles as Critical Care Transport Specialists with Boston MedFlight.

Participants function in a non-clinical, observational, and developmental capacity, working alongside experienced flight clinicians to gain exposure to high-acuity prehospital and interfacility care. The program emphasizes clinical skill advancement, critical thinking, and operational understanding within the transport medicine environment.

Program Responsibilities

Clinical Development and Education

  • Participate in quarterly in-person education sessions focused on critical care transport topics, including EKG interpretation, airway management, laboratory interpretation, and clinical case review
  • Engage in clinical observation shifts alongside Boston MedFlight flight crews
  • Develop a working knowledge of Boston MedFlight protocols, procedures, and operational practices
  • Maintain active engagement in ongoing learning and professional development

Mentorship Engagement

  • Establish and maintain a professional mentoring relationship with a current Boston MedFlight clinician
  • Meet regularly with assigned mentor to review clinical experiences, discuss cases, and identify areas for growth
  • Demonstrate initiative in seeking feedback and applying guidance to clinical practice
  • Collaborate with mentors to develop a pathway toward meeting employment qualifications

Professional Expectations

  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with mentors, staff, and clinical partners
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats
  • Exhibit reliability, accountability, and a commitment to program participation
  • Adhere to all Boston MedFlight policies and program expectations

Eligibility Requirements

  • Current Paramedic licensure (state licensure required based on primary practice location)
  • Minimum of three and a half (3.5) years of relevant prehospital experience (e.g., high-volume 911 service)
  • Within twelve (12) months of meeting Boston MedFlight experience and acuity requirements for employment
  • Ability to attend at least 50% of scheduled mentor meetings and quarterly education sessions
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active pursuit of advanced clinical certifications, such as: 
    • Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C)
    • Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Program (CCEMT-P)
  • Demonstrated commitment to critical care, transport medicine, or advanced prehospital practice
  • Strong clinical foundation with interest in high-acuity patient care

Program Expectations and Commitments

  • Active participation throughout the duration of the 2026 calendar year
  • Engagement in both independent study and guided learning opportunities
  • Willingness to participate in clinical observation experiences in air and ground transport settings
  • Commitment to professional growth and preparation for future employment opportunities

Physical and Operational Considerations

  • Ability to safely participate in ride-along or observation experiences in dynamic clinical environments
  • Capacity to function in high-stress, fast-paced healthcare settings in an observational role
  • Compliance with all safety and operational requirements during program participation

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of background screening, as applicable
  • Compliance with organizational health and safety requirements, including required immunizations
  • Adherence to all confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
