POSITION OVERVIEW
Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children, located in Westminster, VT, is a residential home and school for children ages 5-15 whose families are experiencing challenging circumstances. Nestled on 280 acres in Westminster, Vermont, Kurn Hattin is committed to providing not only academic instruction, but also a nurturing residential community where children are supported socially, emotionally, and academically.
We are seeking a compassionate, adaptable, and mission-driven Classroom Teacher to join our nonprofit residential school community serving children in grades K–8.
The Classroom Teacher plays a vital role in creating a structured, engaging, and supportive learning environment that promotes student achievement, resilience, and confidence. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong instructional practices, cultural responsiveness, emotional intelligence, and a deep commitment to supporting the whole child.
Key Responsibilities
•Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction for students in grades K–8
•Create a positive, inclusive, and trauma-informed classroom environment
•Differentiate instruction to meet diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs
•Build strong, respectful relationships with students and families
•Support students’ social-emotional growth through consistent routines, restorative practices, and positive behavior supports
•Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate academic records
•Collaborate with colleagues, residential staff, counselors, and support personnel to ensure coordinated student care
•Participate in team meetings, professional development, and school-wide activities
•Maintain effective classroom management while fostering student independence and responsibility
•Communicate regularly with caregivers, guardians, and other stakeholders regarding student progress and needs
•Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions
•Contribute to a school culture grounded in empathy, accountability, and high expectations
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required
•Valid state teaching certification/licensure preferred
•Experience teaching elementary or middle school students preferred
•Experience working with children affected by trauma, poverty, family instability, or behavioral challenges strongly preferred
•Knowledge of differentiated instruction, classroom management, and social-emotional learning practices
•Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
•Ability to remain calm, flexible, and solution-oriented in a dynamic environment
•Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered education

Working Environment
This position is based within a residential school setting serving children who may have experienced significant life challenges. Teachers work closely with residential staff, counselors, and child services team members to provide consistent support and stability for students both inside and outside the classroom environment.
