Position Overview
The Small Commercial/Personal Lines Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and pricing small commercial property and casualty risks while building and maintaining strong relationships with independent insurance agents. This role blends analytical decision‑making with consultative partnership, ensuring profitable growth and a positive agent experience. This is a dual role that also involves risk selection and book management of escalated Personal Lines risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk Evaluation & Selection — Review, analyze, and underwrite small commercial accounts across various industries, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines, appetite, and profitability goals.
- Pricing & Quoting — Develop accurate pricing and coverage recommendations based on risk characteristics, loss history, and market conditions.
- Portfolio Management — Maintain a balanced, profitable book of business through disciplined underwriting, renewal management, and proactive identification of opportunities or emerging issues.
- Agent Relationship Management — Build and sustain productive relationships with appointed agents; provide guidance on risk appetite, underwriting decisions, and ways to grow mutual business.
- Collaboration — Work closely with internal teams such as marketing, loss control, and claims to support account decisions and deliver a cohesive customer experience.
- Compliance & Documentation — Ensure underwriting files are complete, accurate, and compliant with regulatory and company standards.
- Market Awareness — Stay informed on industry trends, competitor activity, and regulatory changes that may impact underwriting strategy or risk selection.
Qualifications
- Experience: Prior experience underwriting small commercial P&C risks is required. Prior experience in Personal Lines is also preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of commercial lines products, risk assessment, rating methodologies, and underwriting guidelines.
- Relationship Skills: Proven ability to build trust and rapport with insurance agents; strong communication and negotiation abilities.
- Analytical Ability: Comfortable evaluating data, identifying risk drivers, and making sound underwriting decisions.
- Organization: Ability to manage multiple submissions, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast‑paced environment.
- Tools: Proficiency with underwriting systems, rating platforms, and standard office software.
